Dear Friends,

I am now age 78 and so I would appreciate any help from this wonderful organization. For a very long time I have been searching early 20th century BUTLERs of Roscommon for my mother’s family.

My purpose is to finally learn and pass on to my daughter and her children something of their Irish family roots.  My hope is that they might make contact with young Butlers, possibly of Athlone region for information and friendship. I realize of course, that they may choose not to do so. Beginning without any information, I have learned with certainty that my mother was born in 1905 and is she listed in the 1911 census along with her family as shown attached on line 7.  She immigrated to Boston MA at age 20 in 1925 (I have found her Boston ship’s passenger list) and I have the reliable passenger record of that.  My hope is to learn more and perhaps to establish written (email, etc.) between my family and persons who might like to make contact with me or my family.  Our daughter is married and lives nearby, is now age 33 and she has three beautiful children ages 5 years; 3 years; and 8 months, see attached greeting card .  Her youngest is Catherine, named for my mother.

Attached are two files which I have located in my research and in which I have full confidence of their accuracy.  My mother was a twin and I believe her twin sister Ellen may have become a nun. Very recently by chance of looking for Butlers in Athlone, I came across “tweets” from a young lady (probably early 20s) from Athlone surnamed Butler. She looks astonishingly like our daughter and it appears in group photos that she may also be a twin.  Of course I would not presume to contact such young persons to inquire about family but it suggests to me that there are young Butlers in Athlone that might be related to our small family here on Cape Cod Massachusetts.  If anyone in could provide additional information on 20th century Butlers of Roscommon we would be most grateful to have that. Most importantly we would not presume to contact persons without proper introduction; to be sure my wife Jennifer or our daughter Meredith would initiate any direct contact communication.

Please continue your wonderful work.

Very best regards,

David J. Butler

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your very kind words about the project.

We don't work on trying to locate living individuals because of privacy concerns which you mention in your message. Can I suggest that you check out the online Irish phone book. I would search under Co. Westmeath and you will see a number of Butler records near Athlone. Make sure you use the Residential Tab. http://www.eirphonebook.ie/#  Maybe you can drop a note to some of these individuals to see if there is a connection.

If we can assist with family research back in the late 1800s or so let us know.
