The reality of finding documentationpertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas? is that they simply may not exist. Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ?though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns todocument the population. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of thecountry and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often fromthese registers. ROMAN CATHOLIC: Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is -http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of availablerecords per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possibleassistance. The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

i have discovered that Raheen was on her marriage certificate.

i discovered that Thomas Conry, Raheen, was in the returns pf names of hundred largest ratepayers in County Roscommon. (printed image digitised by the Universiity of Southampton Library digitisation unit).

ANNIE CONROY'S MOTHER WAS LISTED AS MARY AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE DEIGHAN/DEEHAN

THERE IS A MARGARET DEEHAN/DEIGHAN, glenavoo on 1901 census.

i think and hope i am getting closer to tracing my granny, annie conry/conroy.

  • Hi noticed some knowledgeable posters here and hoping someone may be able to help with an ongoing genealogical query.

My grandfather's grandfather was James Gervé Conroy. He was a lawyer, politician, and judge.

His father, Luke Conry, married Sarah Garvey (Garvey=Gervé) whose sister Anne was the grandmother of Stiofán Bairéad, "An Bairéadach", of the Gaelic League, a close friend of Patrick Pearse. Their father was James Garvey of Aughrim.

Charles O'Neill Conroy, the only son of James and my great-grandfather, named his property on Bonaventure in Saint John's Raheen, and we were told James Gervé grew up somewhere other than his family home of Raheen House. About the time Luke Conry was born, Luke Harkan Esq. was the proprietor of Raheen House, Elphin. I think he was named after him.

Luke was later, I believe, the director of the Strokestown Classical Academy, and previous to that may have been the same Luke Conry arrested in Liverpool at about 20 for assaulting a police officer and some Orangemen.

I believe Luke, born 1811 at Raheen House, to be the son of Thomas. James had an elder brother John, who, according to Matthew Barrett, brother of Stiofán Bairéad and manager with the Bank of Ireland in Cork circa 1930, had at least two daughters who had moved to Dublin by then.

I have access to the 1749 Elphin Census but have no idea where to look beyond Thomas Conry of Raheen.

Any help appreciated and happy to collaborate with any knowledgeable people !
