I am looking for my late granny, annie conry/conry,  who married on 10th feb 1908 in st. mary's church,

newtownforbes, co. longford to john allen, lismoy, newtownforbes.  she was 23 years old then.

she said thomas conry, deceased was father.

when she re married in 1927 she stated michael conry and it looks like mary deighan/deehan, mother.

i have discovered that Raheen was on her marriage certificate.

i discovered that Thomas Conry, Raheen, was in the returns pf names of hundred largest ratepayers in County Roscommon. (printed image digitised by the Universiity of Southampton Library digitisation unit).

ANNIE CONROY'S MOTHER WAS LISTED AS MARY AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE DEIGHAN/DEEHAN

THERE IS A MARGARET DEEHAN/DEIGHAN, glenavoo on 1901 census.

i think and hope i am getting closer to tracing my granny, annie conry/conroy.

  • Hi Nancy,

    Thank you for your message.

As Annie was born in 1885, there will be a record of her birth in civil records. (civil registration began in  1864) If you can find her birth record it will confirm her parents? names and also give you a place of birth. Once you have a place of birth more avenues of research will open up for you.

Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

For more information on civil records and how to obtain them check: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html

I hope this is helpful. Once you know the parish that Annie was born in, make sure to join that parish page and repost your message there. That way any volunteers in the area will be able to see it and hopefully give you some advice or assistance.

    Kind regards,

    Genealogy Support

  • Hi Nancy, I think we may be relatively close cousins !

The Conry/Conroy side of the family is a mystery to us, as my gg-grandfather James Gerve Conroy, the second son of Lucas Malachi Conry, was supposed to become a priest and abandoned religion for law, and was not in touch with his father's family after.  His middle name was actually Garvey after his mother Sarah Garvey's family, but he used a semi-French version for some reason :

    http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio.php?id_nbr=7292

He came from a farm at Raheen near Elphin in Roscommon.  The marriage certificate for Lucas Malachi and Sarah uses Conroy for the surname, but it seems James was either born with the surname Conroy, or began to use it when he moved to Dublin.

My email is omaolchonaire@gmail.com.  His wife Elizabeth O'Neill was the daughter of Charles Henry O'Neill of the Feeva, County Antrim, The O'Neill of Clannaboy.  Through her, we can trace our family back through the mists of time. to when legend became history.  It is very frustrating to be stuck at ggg-grandparents as far as my own surname, when we were Priomhseanachies of Ireland.  Please keep in touch about any developments you may make.
