Hello,

I am trying to find information about my great grandmother, Annie Kelly; great grandfather, Martin Geraghty; and grandmother, Annie Mary Geraghty.

Annie Kelly, born either in the 1840s or 50s or 60s, who we think married Martin Geraghty probably around 1880 (we have no solid information about him or where/when they married, but would love to learn).  She had three children in Ireland, Annie Mary Geraghty, born August 12, 1882; Richard Henry Geraghty born January 14, 1884; and William Joseph Geraghty, born January 21, 1888, We think Martin Geraghty might have died around 1888-1892 we have no solid evidence.

Annie Kelly and her three children, Annie, Richard, and William, immigrated to the United States and arrived in New York on April 3, 1889.

We think that Annie Mary and Richard were born somewhere in Roscommon.  We think William was born somewhere in Enniscorthy.

If you have any information about the above listed people, or can lead us to sources where we can research them, we would be extremely grateful.

In advance, thank you for any and all information you can provide.

Peggy

  • Hi Peggy,

www.rootsireland.ie/ has a record of both a church and civil marriage of Ann Kelly and Martin Geraghty in 1880 in Roscommon. The record will cost but may have parents' names and a parish. I'm not sure if bride and groom's ages are given.

rootsireland also has 2 records of burial/ death of Martin Geraghty in Roscommon: 1886 age 40 and 1886 age 52. If they married in 1880 then age 40 looks the more likely. But, I hear you say, how could they have had a child born in 1888? Given that there was no sperm bank system back then I can't answer that I'm afraid. However, rootsireland has his birth as 1886 not 1888 in Roscommon - Ann 1882 & Richard 1884 are also there - all in Roscommon with parents Martin Geraghty and Ann Kelly.

So rootsireland is the source you want Peggy - happy hunting!

  • Pleasure Peegy - glad to be of help.

You can find the parish on rootsireland by clicking on the magnifyong galss at the end of the record. It's a tedious process as you have to try each one until you get the right one; I usually start at the bottom and work up through the list which is alphabetical; it's surprising how many times a parish beginning with A is the one you want!
