Anne Kelly came to the US sometimes in the 1850's. She and her siblings settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Anne was born on 8-19-1934 in Ireland. She died in New Orleans on 12-02-1884. She married Patrick Morrisey on 01-05-1853 Patrick was born in Ireland in 1825 and he died in New Orleans on 12-8-1886. Anne's obituary listed her home as Kingsland County, Roscommon Ireland. I do not know what Kingsland Co.is or where, believe the name has been changed. Therefore I do not know the parish. Anne had four siblings who also settled in New Orleans: 1. Bridget C. Kelly married William E. Novel, her immigration year was 1855 2. Mary Kelly married John F. Hart 1896 3. Peter Kelly - Naturalization 2nd district court Ireland #65 4/13/1868 4. John Kelly - Naturalization 2nd district court Ireland #49 10-18-1868 Searching for the parents of these individuals. John Kelly was my Great Grandfather. His daughter Katie Kelly Fussell and her two brothers James and Willie were listed living with Anne K. Morrisey in New Orleans in the 1870 census. We know nothing about John. My grandmother Katie never told us her history. Would appreciate any info. about Ireland connection. We have visited Ireland and tis a most beautiful land. With love and hope Glenn and Dianna Smith

  • Glenn & Diana,

Thought your query was interesting - am a Galway Volunteer - not Roscommon - but did some quick looking.  Kingsland is a townland in Roscommon, adjacent to Lough Gara.  If you simply put in the query into Google the place will appear in a map.

I had a look at Griffiths Valuation - a tax record from the 1850's and their is no sign of Kingsland - BUT did have luck in the Irish Census records of 1901.  There was a 70 year old "Boarder" called Winnie Kelly" living with a McGarry family at that time. A guess is that she was a close relation to you/ your ancestors - perhaps the youngest sister who did not emigrate and stayed unmarried/or the spouse/widow of a Kelly that remained.  As she was a boarder, it might sugest she was the last of her line in Ireland. You can see the record yourself at

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Breedoge/Kin…

You will find a huge number of Kelly's in Roscommon and East Galway - but by searching the church records you should be able to find out about the Kelly's there.  You are fortunate that you know the townland - which is what Kingsland is.  With a bit of luck, the local people might remember Winnie's people - and you almost certainly have living relations there - suggest you continue to explore.

I will leave any further comments to one of our volunteers in Roscommon.  Please spread the word about Ireland XO.  Many people in Ireland do not realise that New Orleans was such a destination for the Irish before the US Civil War - and there is little awareness today of the Yellow Fever that devestated many of the Irish population there. Many more of the Irish in the US are from the Southern States than is realised.

Hope you get to visit Kingsland sometime soon.

    Best..

  • Kingsland & Ballinameen are shared parishes in North Roscommon , it's where I come from. The Kelly's & Hart's were married to my father's family. There are families today within close proximity.
Hope this is of interest to your research .
