I'm looking for McManaways around Castlerea, particularly in the late 1700s and early 1800s. My gt gt gt grandfather was Thomas McManaway who married Ellen Dalton c. 1808. They seem to have moved to Cork soon after, and had several children. My direct ancestor was Jack McManaway who married Bridget Kenny of Ballinasloe, and they emigrated to NZ in 1858. Does anyone share my ancestors? I've seen plenty of McManaways in later records for the area, but don't know how they connect to mine.

  • Hi there i have a list of links that you mite have some luck  finding information on try them and best of luck.

NEW ZEALAND: Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they might have travelled with?..etc.? Generally, more information was given at the port ofarrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a goodplace to find more information -and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. There are lots ofbooks and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could lookat: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand. Also try and have a look on these sites.

Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at ).

  • Disclaimer: I am a professional genealogist and help out on this site when/where I can but will also gladly accept commissioned research

I see this query in other places with a contact name for someone else researching this person. Is that you? Patrice Connelly, patrice@saraband.com.au

The spelling of this name ( McMenamy) is peculiar to Roscommon and in particualr the civil parish of Kilkeeven where I can trace back the name back to 1834.

Few records go back that far, but I find some members of the family occupying more than modest homes and as a result of the wealth/status there may be older property, tax, estate records, newspapers, deeds and wills. It migth take some digging, but possible. The obvious place to start would be Jack in 1858 and expanded the knowledge of his family sideways and backwards.

    regards

    Peter

  • I believe I am connected. I believe Thomas McManaway and Eleanor Dalton could be my GGGG Grandparents. Lets compare notes!

  • Thank you to everyone who replied, and I'm sorry I haven't been back for a long time. Life got in the way. Yes Peter, that is me. If anyone else wants to contact me, that email is still valid and I am still here. I hope to come to Ireland sometime in the next year or so. Looking forward to hearing from cmscheerens and anyone else.

I would dearly love to take this research back at least another generation, as I have found other relatives and I think the link is back a few decades. I do have a website called Saraband genes (needs updating) which will give anyone more details on what I already have.

  • I've recently found a possible connection to McManaway from Roscommon, Ireland.

    I'll explain as follows:

I have an Walter Power whose parents are listed as Anthony Power & Eleanor McManaway who travelled to Australian in 1857 on board the New Great Britian.

Underneath this entry there is an Eleanor Power whose parents are listed as Edward & Mary with 3 children Ellen, Michael & Mary???.

Depending on the records looked at some have these 2 people as being married.

I'm seeking clarification from anyone that has knowledge of the McManaway or Power family to contact me by return message.

    Thank you

  • Hi Oneday

Yes, this is the same family as mine. Eleanor was the daughter of Thomas McManaway and Ellen Dalton. She was born c. 1812 but not sure if in Cork like her brother Thomas Dalton McM or in Castlerea where the family lived for a long while. However, I don't have anything about your Walter or Eleanor Power.
