Looking  for information on Thomas Cullen born some where in Co Roscommon c1833 to 1835. His mother may have been Jane or Mary Jane. He moved to Birmingham and in 1860 married an Ada Powers. They later moved to London Clerkenwell where they both died in 1914. He was a Sawyer. Any info greatfully received

The  1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Roscommon shows 28 Cullen records. Since you don't have his fathers name, do you know the name of Thomas' oldest son?

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

Thomas Cullen's eldest son was also named Thomas (My GGrandfather) but was born in Birmingham in 1861.

Since I cannot find Cullens in the UK 1851 census I am assuming they came to Birmingham any time before 1861. The 1861 census shows Thomas Cullen living with his wife's family. His mother, Jane or Mary Jane, may have still been in Ireland since she only shows up after they moved to London.

    Best regards

The Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted in Co. Roscommon in 1855. Assuming Thomas' father was alive in 1855, he likely would be listed in the survey.  Many times the oldest son was named after the paternal grandfather. I looked for Thomas Cullen records in Griffiths and found only 1 which is below. Ardcarn civil parish is in North Roscommon. This is a lead. If Thomas' father was deceased in 1855 or he did not name his oldest son after his father, all bets are off.

Thanks for that. I must apologise since I forgot to mentioned the name of a John Cullen, which cropped up fairly late in my research. I had forgotten that I obtained a death certificate for Mary Jane Cullen which stated she was the widow of John Cullen a Sawyer and Journeyman. Of course I dont know when he died or where!

Since Mary Jane first appears in the English 1871 census under the name 'Jane' and later in the 1881 census under the name 'Mary Jane' livng at the same addresses in London with children and in laws of Thomas and Ada Cullen I'm pretty happy with the accuracy of information. She was born 1811 or 1814 in Ireland but no mention of the county of birth.

Once again please accept my apologies.

    Regards

No problem. Here are the John Cullens (including variants) who were in the Griffiths for Co. Roscommon.
