Hello. I am looking for Kelly and Lynch families in the immediate areas of Camla (Camlagh) and Glenmore, Parish of Taughmaconnell, Co. Roscommon.

Specifically, I have my G-Great Grandparents John KELLY married Bridget McHUGH approximately 1857 (unknown location). From this marriage I have been able to locate birth/baptism records for the following children. All of the baptism records indicate the townland of Camla. ALL of the baptisms were performed by a parish priest listed as J. Walsh. As a note of interest , the Civil birth record of the following children were recorded in the Parish of Creagh, County of Galway.

William Kelly; baptised Feb 1865

Bridget Kelly; baptised Mar 1867

Catherine Kelly; baptised Mar 1869

Michael Kelly; baptised Jan 1871

John Kelly; baptised Feb 1873

JAMES Kelly; birth and baptism unknown

James Kelly later marries Catherine LYNCH (baptised Oct 1871; Parents Thomas LYNCH and Bridget FALLON; townland Glenmore (Glanmore).

I have three areas where I need assistance.

1. Where to look for possible marriage and/or birth records of JOHN Kelly and his wife Bridget McHUGH.

2. I have searched every conceivable location for record of their son JAMES Kelly (birth between 1864-1871) with no luck. James Kelly is my Great Grandfather.

3. Where I to find the location of the church and/or Father J. Walsh where all John and Bridget's children were baptised.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I seem to have the 'brick wall'

  • Hi,

Where did you get the baptismal records?  From Taughmaconnell Church?  Was the townland on the record?  There seems to be a good run of Taughmaconnell RC baptism & marriage records - have you been able to search them on microfilm?

I'm not sure if it's the same couple, but according to roscommon.rootsireland.ie a John Kelly and Brigid McHugh were married in Strokestown RC in 1857.

  • Hi there,

Ibud is quite right. If you are searching for the Roman Catholic church records, then these (Taughmaconnell) start from 1842 for baptismal records and 1863 for marriage records. They are available at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2432, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0926061.

The RC church records for Strokestown start from 1830 for baptismal records aand marriage records. They are available at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4608, 4609, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0989745.

If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm You might be able to find information for James here. It might be possible that James was baptised elsewhere. Perhaps the family moved at some stage?

Perhaps you could write to the parish priest in Creagh to see if they have a record of Fr. J. Walsh. http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/html/ballinasloe.asp

Hopefully, someone in the local community will be able to shed more light for you.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
