Hi, I'm trying to pin down some information about my Gilhooley ancestors from Roscommon/Mayo/Sligo. I know one of them lived in Ballaghaderreen in the 1840s. I would be grateful for any information.

I have the document which shows that James Gilhooley, my great grandfather, (1825-1886) was apprenticed as an apothecary for two years to Archibald Armstrong on July 19, 1845. James was born in 1825, the first son of Andrew Gilhooley and Rose Cogan who married in Kilronan parish in 1824. James emigrated to Australia in around 1949 (possibly later) as did his brother John, and worked as a doctor in Sydney. His siblings, Bernard, Louisa and Roger, remained in Ireland I presume.

I would like to find out whether or not the whole family of Andrew and Rose lived in Ballaghaderreen or if they lived in another parish/county, and only their son James ended up there for his apprenticeship. I cannot find out anything definite about Andrew (my great-great) apart from his marriage - no birth/baptism date, death date, or occupation.  They are reported as coming from either Sligo or Roscommon in some second-hand resources. A few Andrew Gilhooleys come up in Tithe Applotments or Griffiths Evaluations for other parishes around the Mayo-Roscommon-Sligo area - Termonbarry, Kilronan, Cloontuskert, but not Kilcolman parish - as far as I can see.

I hope someone in your parish might be able to help me nail down the birth, place of residence, occupation and death details of Andrew and of his wife Rose. Thank you, Kristine McLean

  • Thanks Bryan. I just recently got this information via a Royal College of Physicians search. I have also found out a bit more about James's parents since I wrote my first comment. I would very much like to make contact with you direct if possible given we are related - second cousins once removed possibly. There may be some information we could share. If you know how to do this via this website please let me know. Kristine McLean

  • GREETINGS FROM ONTARIO, CANADA

I would be interested in exchanging GEDMATCH Numbers with you.

My Gilhulys/Gilhooleys lived in the Parish of Kilronan in the same time period as your Gilhooley Family.

My Direct Descendant William Gilhuly (1804) was born in the County of Roscommon according to his tombstone in Canada.  He settled in Raleigh Township, Ontario in Canada in 1828.

I hypothesize your Ancestor James Gilhooley was born about 1795 if his first born son Andrew was born in 1825.

There were many, many Gilhooleys and Gilhulys in County Roscommon.  There are also many derivations of the name such as Gilloleys anf Gilluleys.

RootsIreland would be a good place to see their births, marriages and deaths.

    Diane Gilhula

My 3RD Great Grandfather changed his surname about 1860 in Canada from Gilhuly to Gilhula due to mail mixups.

I would be interested in seeing if we are related.
