searching for our family connections in Ireland of Margaret and John Carney who immigrated to Australia in 1862 on board the Greyhound. We have an entry in the Griffiths Land Valuations as 1858 residence John Carney Tibohine Parish Roscommon Ireland Lessor Christopher Taaffe County Roscommon Barony Frenchpark Parish Townland Curragh Sallagh. John's parents were Michael Carney and Catherine Kennet and Margaret's parents were John Eagan and Sarah King. John Carney is my maternal GGG grandfather and I'm hoping to connect with our Irish relatives.

  • Hi Laura,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone who knows of the family makes a connection with you.

In the meantime, have you tried checking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there is any family still in the area at the time? If not, you can do so here:  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Laura, This reply is indeed 10 years later. However, I wonder if we are related. I believe my 5x great grandfather was Bartholomew Carney, he is listed on that Griffith's Evaluation in 1858 along with John Carney and Michael Carney. Bartholomew's son Andrew left Ireland for Liverpool sometime after 1858 but not later than 1866, as he had married his wife in St. Helens by then. I don't know if you'll still receive this notification, but it was worth a try.
