I wonder if anyone can help? I have been tracing my father's family back to Roscommon, and have become stuck at my great-great-gandfather: Bartholomew Carmey. He was a farmer (I presume a tenant farmer) in the parish of Tibohine. All I know of him is that he was born in 1815.

He certainly had a least one son: Andrew who left Ireland around the early 1840's (famine?) and ended up in St. Helen's in Lancashire. He married an Ellen Kane/Kean, probably in England, and they proceeded to have about 8 children. One of these children was Thomas, my grandfather.

Ellen is placed as Irish on the English census, so I wonder if she came from the same area as Andrew, her husband. Her father is given as a Nicholas Kane/Kean.

These three people are my main interest, especially their extended families. I have no idea who Bartholomew married, (in effect who was my great-great grandmother), and if there were other children from their marriage, and if so, did some stay in Ireland?

If anyone can help it would be really appreciated.

Kind regards, Maggie Buckingham (nee Carney)

  • Hi Maggie,

I've been searching rootsireland.ie for Bartholomew with little success so far.

I couldn't get a birth or marriage record which would have his parents' names.

However, the Tithe Applotments (free to search) have 2 Carneys in Tibohine Roscommon in 1825:

A Lewis and a Mathew. The Townland is Commons of Frenchpark.

I searched rootsireland for births 1800 - 1860 for Carney Roscommon with father Mathew but got no matches; for Lewis I got one - Mary in 1840.

I searched for children of Bartholomew Carney born in Roscommon 1845 + - 20 years and got 3 Mary 1840, James 1826 and William 1826. I didn't get an Andrew though.

A number of trees on ancestry have Bartholomew married to Jane Graham born 1819 but I couldn't find a record of the marriage.

I did find the marriage of Bartholomew Carney to Jane McCormick on 14th Nov 1835 in Massachusetts

I notice that you say Andrew left in the 1840's but if Bartholomew was born 1815, Andrew would have been very young at the time. In the English census in 1871 Andrew is 31 so born abt 1841.

With the Keanes, there are 16 Ellens born 1843 + - 1 on rootsireland.ie in all counties but none with father Nicholas or in Roscommon.

Maybe a Tibohine expert will get better results for you.

  • Hello Maggie, I don't know if you're still online, but you and me are related.

Your grandfather Thomas is my 3x great granduncle. His brother James was my 3x great-grandfather.

I am in contact with someone related to William Carney, who was your 3x great granduncle.

I can't tell you much, but Bartholomew (pet name Bartley) stayed in Ireland and died an old man. He was married to Maria (Mary) Madden on Valentine's Day 1824.

I don't think Andrew on the Griffith's Valuation was my 4x great grandfather. I think he may have been his dad, only because his name appears first on the list. There was also James Senior and James Junior.

If you read this, look for my tree on Ancestry, it should come up. It's something like Kirkpatrick- Bannister+ Carney.
