I'm seeking information about my 5th-great-grandparents.  Their names were Mary (Mariam?) Nowlan (Nolan?) and David Fitzmaurice.  Mary was born around 1801 in Strokestown, Roscommon; David born around 1796 in Mayo.  I found a reference that they were married on 14 Feb 1819 in the Catholic church at "Laughlin, Roscommon."  I'm at a loss regarding this family, and am hoping that there will be some parish records that may shed some light on this, particularly the correct spelling of the names, information about where they lived, their parents, etc.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland has a transcription of the marriage. The marriage was on February 14th 1819 in Loughlynn RC church. According to the transcription both the bride and groom were from a place called Leraicce which I can't find at the moment and possibly it was a local place name that did not become an official townland. Below is a link to the parish register and you should be able to lookup the entry on the register. It is possible that the register is in Latin so let me know if you need assistance. Loughlynn is an RC Parish in western Roscommon on the border with Mayo. Did they have children born in Ireland?

  • Thank you very much for the information, and so quickly!  Yes, they had several children born in Ireland. Their children were John (born 1818, though due to marriage date this date of birth is in question), Peter (born 1820, married about 1855 to Nancy Ann Judge in Ballyhaunis, Mayo), Ellen (born 1822), Thomas (born about 1823?, this is my 4th-great-grandfather), Sarah (born 1824), and Mary (born 1826).  I have pretty much NO information about Ellen, Sarah, or Mary.  Peter did not leave Ireland, and died there.  Thomas came to the United States and settled here.  While Peter was my 5th-great-uncle, I have quite a bit of information on his family (children Thomas John b. 1855, Ellen b. 1859, Mary b. 1860, Catherine b. 1864, and Patrick Michael b. 1865, all born in or near Ballyhaunis).

  • It looks like the townland name on the marriage record is "Lecarrow" in the civil parish of Tibohine aka the Catholic Parish of Loughlynn.

David Fitzmaurice could well have come from Co. Mayo, as Catholic marriages always took place in the bride's home parish.

So you need to be looking for Nowlan (or Nolan) in the Tithe Applotment records of 1824 to find her family. (Also note the names of the marriage witnesses, who would also had to have been living locally. It looks like one is Pat Lowry). That no Nowlans are listed on the Tithe records for Lecarrow, does not mean they were not there. Parish baptismal records are your best bet for confirm that. (You are lucky the townland address had also been recorded!).

  • Next clue...  Griffith's Valuation 1857... you have Lowrys in Lecarrow and, just to the west of that townland... Nolans in Tully (aka Tullyartagh in 1824, where you have a "John Nowlan"). Certain to be a close relative. If you seek out his baptisms and check out the godparent names, you may discover more.
