Before I pay money to join any of the geneological sites in Ireland, I would like to know if there are any records of early RC baptisms in Castleconor parish prior to 1835? I am looking for family information regarding a Thomas Brennan, listed in the Tithe Applotment records in Corballa in Castleconor in 1833 or his brother William Frederic Brennan, my direct ancestor, who was born in Corbally, Castleconor, approximately 1789 and emigrated to Quebec prior to 1828.

If I can find out if there ARE any records, I will be happy to pay one of the sites or hire a geneologist to search.

PLEASE contact me via email at Lindag10@hotmail.com as I am not sure if I will be able to find this board again!

Thank you!

  • Hi Linda

I hope you receive this OK

I couldn't find a birth/baptism record of William or Thomas Brennan on www.rootsireland.ie/ or on Family Search or www.irishgenealogy.ie/ or findmypastireland!

I assume you are aware of the trees on ancestry.com which have William born in Corbally Sligo with father James but none provides a source of this information

There are some William & Thomas baptism records from Sligo 1820 + - 10 years on rootsireland.ie/ but none from Castleconnor RC parish

I'm no Sligo expert but from what I can see on the net the earliest RC records available for Castleconor start in 1855

  • 1835 is the earliest date noted on John Grenham's website for Catleconnor RC records - see here  The NLI film only seems to covers the details from 1855 onward.

The Irish Times list mentions some slightly earlier marriages for the parish going back to 1831 availabale on Ancestry, but when I tried a quick search of these I was only able to find 4 marriage records for dates before 1835 ...

  • Thank you, everyone, you have all been very helpful, even if it didn't lead to anything. At least I know that I'm probably not going to go any further, which is a shame.

The Ancestry tree is mine...I think I have two there, due to computer glitches. I have to figure out a way to merge them. I am not all that computer savvy...if anyone has any more ideas on things I could look for that early, I'd appreciate it.

I haven't been able to find anything in the 1826 Irish Tithe Applotment records, either, but I know Thomas was there in 1829, his brother William mentioned him when filling out information for the McCabe's List in Ottawa in February, 1829 as a relative that still lived in Ireland (that's where I first saw Corbally or Sligo mentioned) that might be interested in emigrating to Bytown to work on the Rideau Canal. Although he didn't emigrate in time to work on the Canal, Thomas was in Canada by 1837 with his wife Mary.

Again, any other ideas are most welcome, thank you, all of you!
