Hello - i'm trying to trace any information i can find on my husband's maternal family. His grandfather was a James McVeigh (spelt MacVeigh) on his mum's birth certificate. James was born on April 21 1881 in  Enniscrone. His father was Daniel and a member of the RIC - badge number 34611. Daniel was married twice and James is from his first marriage

i would be greatful for any information about the family's life. how did Jame' mother die; why did he move to England and when? why did the family sell their land to someone in Scotland. + most importantly of all are their any living relatives still in Ireland

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Enniscrone (also spelled Inishcrone) is actually in the Civil Parish of Kilglass. You should repost his message on the Kilglass parish page in the hope that one of our volunteers in the area recognises the family name.

If Daniel was a member of the R.I.C. you may be able to find some information in his service records. Check the UK National Archives for information on these at the following link:

     http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/royal-irish-constabulary.htm

Have you tried looking in the 1901 and 1911 census records to see if there are any records of any family that remained in Ireland? This would help establish if there were still MacVeighs in the area at the turn of the century. You can search these here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Perhaps it may also be an idea to also post this message in a more local forum, such as a local newspaper, in order to reach out to any relatives that may still be in the area. Some possible places you may be able to do this are:

    The Sligo Champion: http://www.independent.ie/regionals/sligochampion/

    Sligo Today: http://www.sligotoday.ie/

You could also try contacting the Sligo Heritage centre for assistance-however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

Co. Sligo Heritage & Genealogy Centre,

    Aras Reddan,

    Temple Street,

    Sligo.

    Phone: +353 (0) 71 9143728    Email: heritagesligo@eircom.net

I hope that this is helpful.

    Kind regards,
