GILLESPIE family of Easkey County Sligo - My mother was Ellen (Nell) Gillespie born 8 March 1920 in Easkey.  Her parents were Michael Gillespie and Mary Forde.  Brothers were Patrick, John, James and Michael, sisters were Mary, Katie, and Bridget. Patrick, John, Katie and Mary emigrated to the New York area and I wouldliketo receive information relating to this and their families.

I would also like information on the families ofMichael Gillespie and Mary Forde.  Michaels parents were Patrick Gillespie and Mary Grehan of Cabragh (Kilglass parish?).

This looks like Ellen's family in the 1911 census. Mary Forde's mother was Bridget.

I could not locate a civil marriage index record for Michael and Mary. The 1911 census record indicates that were married in 1902-1903.

This may be the 1901 census record for Michael Gillespie with his widowed mother and siblings.

Possibly this is Mary Forde in the 1901 census working for the Flynn family.

Suggest you use www.ellisisland.org to search for the Gillespies coming into New York. I think the record go up to 1924.

  • Roger, many thanks for your swift response.  I was aware of both the 1901 and 1911 census where you rightly point out the family of Michael Gillespie living in Easkey.

I am also aware of the Ellis Island records from wher I have evidence of brothers and sisters of Michael Gillespie travelling to New York between 1903 and 1911.  I have not however been able to trace the brothers and sister of my mother who travelled later, there was if I recall correctly mention that they may have gone via Canada?

I have also not been able to trace other facets of the Gillespies earlier than 1877 which was the birth of my Grandfather, Michael.

    Any other ideas?

    Many thanks, Michael

Can't tell if you have the civil birth record for Michael or you just know his year of birth. Below is the civil birth index record. I also went on www.familysearch.org and found this baptismal index record.

I could not find a place named Gabragh.

You can get a copy of the civil birth record for about 4 euros from the General Register Office. The record will show the names of the parents and where they lived in 1877. If you want to get a copy let me know and I can forward instuctions.

Finally, below the index record is a link to the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Easky parish. There is a William Gillespie listed. Not sure how he is related or not.
