I am looking for any connections to Peter Hasty who we are fairly sure came from Confinough/Rattinagh area and was born around 1827.  He came over to Yorkshire sometime after 1847 and was living in Dunnington near York by 1851.  Peter was married to Mary Kelly (from Easkey Co Sligo) - but I have no record of whether they married in Ireland or over in England - or even if they met in Ireland or in England.

We know that Peter was in Roscommon from 1843 to 1846 as he was either claiming from the Poverty Relief Loans, or being a guarantor for others claiming from 1843 to 1846 and that his mother is Catherine Hasty.  This is the only information we have for him in Ireland.

Peter is on the 1851 and 1861 census returns for Dunnington in Yorkshire but he died in 1869.  He is buried with Mary and one of their sons, James, who died in 1859 - all are in York Cemetery.  Their two daughters, Mary and Bridget (but known as Annie) married and stayed in York all their lives.  They also had a son, Richard, who was in the army and spent most of his military career in India (I have his army records).  When Richard came out of the army he settled in London in Shoreditch and ran a public house called The Barley Mow (which is still there!) until his death in 1910.

We would love to find out more about Peter if we can and if there is anyone out there who has any connections to Hasty's (or the Kelly's from Easkey) we would love to hear from you.

Rattinagh townland is actually in Kilglass civil parish which is to the northeast of Cloonfinlough civil parish. Unfortunately, RC church records for the Kilglass area don't start until 1865.

I checked the 1833 Tithe Applotment listing for Kilglass civil parish. There were three Hasty records in Rattinagh townland: Thomas , John and Mathew Hasty. Possibly one of the three was the father of Peter.

By the 1855 Griffiths there were no Hastys in the parish. Kilglass parish was hit hard by the famine and evictions such as the Ballykilcline eviction.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for the information about Rattinagh townland and the Tithe Appointment Listing.  We have been searching for years and to get this far is good.    Thank you for your help - we will keep on searching. Maybe I should put a post on the Kilglass civil parish as well just in case?

Looking at online records for England there are quite a lot of Hasty's in Yorkshire, all from either Galway/Ireland so I suppose they could be connected somehow.

    Thanks again,

    Jo

You can post in Kilglass. Maybe the Parish liaison might have some info although I don't know how frequently he checks the messages. All of the messages no matter where they are posted end up on the general Ireland Reaching Out message board.
