My great grandmother was Mary Mulligan of Lomcloon. Her father was either Patrick or Philip. Mary was born about 1853 and died in Mullaghroe, Sligo in 1916. Mary married Andrew Kilroy in February of 1879.

  • Dear Cathy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Mary and Andrew married in Ballaghadreen in Co. Roscommon on 6th Feb 1879 which leads me to believe that she was from that parish. Between marriage and her death she obviously moved to Sligo. The witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Kilroy and Mary Casey, perhaps these names mean something to the family?

I will pass this to our Ballaghadreen volunteer to see if he can add anything further.

    Best wishes

  • Cathy:

I looked at this message last night and there is no civil record of this marriage which would have given you the father's name.I searched on Roots ireland for the marriage in Co. Sligo and got no record but Clare did a broader search and found the marriage in Ballaghaderreen just across the border in Roscommon. Since Ballaghaderreen was the "big" town in the area, I'm guessing that Mary was working somewhere in the town which is why the marriage occurred in Ballaghaderrreen. I looked for her baptismal record in Ballaghaderreen and there was no record. I'm guessing that she was baptized in Killaraght and Kilfree parish which is closer to Lomcloon, however, the baptismal records for that parish don't start until 1873.

The 1858 Griffiths for Killaraght has a Patrick and Philip Mulligan in Lomcloon which I assume is why you believe that one of them is the father of Mary.

I will do more searching and get back to you.

The only Mulligan family in Lomcloon in 1901 is this family. It is possible that Margret was married to a brother of Mary Mulligan. If we can determine when they married probably 1874 or earlier we may be able to locate a civil marriage index record which would lead you to the civil marriage record and then the father of Mary.

  • Oh my gosh!! Thank you to both of you for the research!! I have spent a lot of time trying to find this family connection. I would LOVE to find out Mary's parents' names! Family "heresay" is that she was from the "Islands" which would mean Killaraght area. I know she had an uncle Philip a priest and a cousin Philip also a priest who served Curry, Sligo for many years. I believe he died in 1930. I tried contacting Maynooth for records, but apparently there are none for that time frame. A so appreicate all you are doing!!

  • Dear Cathy

While Roger does what he does best, you could have a look online for any heritage society in the area on the off chance there is a local heritage publication that could be of use to you. Increasingly local groups are publishing journals and books about their parish history.

Best of luck with your search

  • Hello from Minnesota!
Since I posted that message in 2015, I have found that Philip Mulligan was my second great grandfather; his death certificate states his son in law, Andrew Kilroy, was present at death in 1894. Philip's daughter, Mary ( born about 1853) was married to Andrew Kilroy. Their son Martin, born a twin in 1887 Mullaghroe, was my maternal grandfather. I can't find the name of my second great grandmother, Philip's wife. Any connection? Thank you! Cathy
