RESEARCHING JOHN HEALY & CATHERINE --& 7 CHILDREN - SCHOOL RECORDS

Unlikely we can locate school records from the 1850s in Kilshalvy.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and only found one likely baptismal record for one of the seven siblings and it was for Michael in 1842 rather than the 1847 in your message. Mother was Catherine McGloin. I have a link to the parish register for Kilshalvy from 1842-1877 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0124  There is an annotation that the records prior to 1852 are not all there and I looked at the register and it is pretty hard to read in the early years. The record for Michael shows that the family was living in Cough townland (actually Coagh) and the 1858 Griffiths Valuation shows a John Healy in Coagh in Kilshalvy civil parish. There was also a Dominick Healy in Coagh likely a relation.

I did locate the death record for Roger Healy in 1910 and the informant was his brother in law John Meehan. I also located the 1901 and 1911 census record for the John Meehan family. Not sure when Roger Healy came back to Ireland but I cannot locate him in Sligo in the 1901 census. I did not find the death records for John and Catherine Healy but images are only available starting 1878 as of now.

Thank you for your helpful & prompt response.

When Patrick & Michael arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 4 June 1865 Patrick was 20 & Michael 18. Logically Patrick was born 1845 & Michael 1847 approx. The record you kindly located indicates Michael born 1842. Michael died 1900 with age shown as 56 indicating a birth year of 1845 approx. Patrick died 1891 aged 46 making a birth year of 1845. So a fair bit of guesswork.

The similarities ( names & place) of your record of Michael  Baptism can't be ignored.

I will follow up on those websites.

I was hoping there might be something more concrete in the School Records.

Many immigrants adjusted their age to their advantage. Sometimes it was better to be younger other times being older than they were was a benefit. Once they made the change, they usually maintained th erroneous year.

There is a brief history of schooling in Sligo in 18th and 19th centuries and a list of schools with dates on South Sligo Genealogy Research website.

Ballymote school is on the list with date 1834 when it had 39 male puplis and 30 female.

There are some National Schools registers from closed schools in 24 counties on Find My Past. Earliest starting year for a Sligo register on the list is in 1890s.

Coincidently the only monument to a teacher in Ireland is a statue of Francis Cunningham Doyle in Ballymote.

There is a death of a Roger Healy aged 65 ,Bachelor 23rd Feb 1910 informant John Meehan brother in law .

That appears to fit Bob

Yes. Thank you Catherine. This is one of my Grandfather's brothers. He remained in Ireland. John Meehan was a nephew-in-law, married to Rodger's sister Catherine Healy.

Hi Bob ,yes Patrick Healy the convict was my Gr Gr Grandfather.

Have you been able to find out any more about the Healy's of Sigo.

According to the convict records. Patrick was born approx. 1808, Ballymote,Sligo, Ireland

He had sisters Mary & Anne, brothers John & Domminick, His wife was Margaret Connors married on 9/11/1831. Margaret was born Cloyne, Annakissy, Cork, Ireland

Mary married Thomas Dillon, who was convicted with Patrick & came to Tasmania with Patrick aboard the Hyderabad 2 arriving on 26/8/1849

Patrick's wife, Margaret & 7 children arrived aboard the Fortune in 1855 along with Mary Dillon & her children

Patrick died at Horton on 1st March 1880.

I believe Patrick & Margaret are buried at the number R11,Stanley, Old Pioneer Cemetry, Circular Head, Burnie, Tas.

A relative of yours, Terry Healy a grand son of Patrick, was doing a lot of research into the family. He would be very elderly now if he is still alive but his family may have his records. My last information was that he had gone to Western Australia to live with relatives.
