    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I;ve searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  and can not come up with any baptismal or civil births records for Catherine or any of the siblings. Also, did not find a marriage record for Thomas Brennan and Mary/Maris Shannon anywhere in Ireland. I also looked for death records in 1909 and 1930 and did not see a likely record for Thomas and Mary.

I did locate an 1864 baptismal record for a Catherine Brennan in Sligo with a father Thomas but the mother's name was different. See below.

Let me know if you have any other clues.

  • Could the surname of Catherine's mother be Gannan instead of Shannon ?
What's your source for her name - might this be a mishearing or mis-transcription ?

I see a marriage of a Thomas Brennan and Mary Gannan in Sligo in 1866 and a number of births for children including a Catherine Brennan born 6th January 1869 in Tobercurry Co. Sligo. Other children to this couple include a Patrick 1871 and Thomas 1873 - I did not see a sister named Bridget but there quite a number of possible matches in the same district...

  • Is this death registration of Mary Brennan in Boyle 1930 ?  11th September at Ardmore, aged 86, labourer's widow. Infornant John White, grandson. (Irish Genealogy. ie)

I couldn't see a death registration in Boyle in 1909 for Thomas. What is your source for his death? Ludovich is an unusual middle name for an Irishman.

Have you located Thomas & Mary on 1901 census and Mary on 1911 census?

Did Catherine marry William McDonald before or after leaving Ireland?

Do you know if any of Catherine's siblings remained in Ireland?

  • Catherine married after arriving in New Jersey. The middle name is accurate by family accounts, he went by Luke, and there is a son named Luke. The verbal info i have from the Bridget Brennan/Sullivan relatives in NJ, is a sister Mary Ann remained in Ireland on the Brennan Farm. She passed sometime in early 1930's. It is also said that the Brennan Farm in/near Sligo was sold to someone prior to proper documentation of NO HEIRS known. There are plenty of heirs in the USA. The Brennan/Sullivan relatives are confirming this information and legal avenues for the USA Family.

  • I tried death registrations of Luke Brennan in case informant gave that name instead of Thomas.

Only 2 in 1909. Roscommon Superintendent Registry District, aged 86, widower, informant son Charlie. The other was in County Monaghan.

1907 Roscommon S.R. District, age 69, labourer, died in workhouse.

1908 Roscommon S.R. District age 75, wodower, informant was son, David.

1911 Tobbercurry , County Sligo, aged 80, farmer, informant Mary Brennan, widow of deceased.

I even searched under Ludovich as a surname in case there was a wrong transcription. I doubt if "Ludovich" would have been used in Ireland; there were enough problems trying to spell native Irish names.

I had no luck with birth registration of son Luke either. I searched 1864 (start of civil registration of births)-1875.

    There were 2 in 1871 :

    Boyle S.R. District with parents Luke & Maria;

Athlone S.R. district, parents Luke & Mary (Kelly)

1868 Roscommon S.R. District, parents Luke & Marie

Luke births with a father called Thomas:

1864 Tubbercurry S.R. District,   parents Thomas & Atty

1869 Roscommon S.R. District, parents Thomas & Mary Anne (Gilleran)

Interestingly most Luke Brennan births during that period were in counties Roscommon and Sligo.

Luke , the son may have been registered under a different first name or his parents didn't register him, or he may heve been older than you think and born before civil registration, or not born in Ireland,

Do you know if Mary Ann married? Have you searched for her on 1901 and 1911 census as Mary or Mary Ann Brennan and for death registration 1930s & 1940s?

Do you know what happened to Luke, Patrick and Thomas junior?
