I am looking for information on Frank Finnerty b.1845 and Mary May b.1845.

They had two sons who emmigrated to the United Sates around 1880.  Hugh and Frank P. Finnerty  (who was my great grandfather) Mary May emmigrated later alone and there is no record of their father emmigrating so I assume he died in Ireland.

Frank married Catherine Higgins (b.1870) in 1890 though I am not sure if she was also from Sligo. I believe her parents to be John Higgins and Bridgete Lynch.

  • I have Finnerty a relative from Sligo. Have you been able to narrow it down to where in Sligo? I found a bit of info on naturalization records for her husband.

After 1864 they were "required" to register births but.... you have to be a little open minded. From my experience, actually with my Finnerty's sons birth in Co Sligo, was that the name she used here is listed in the records as Fenaghty. I have also seen Finaghty.  Perhaps try some searches with those spellings.

Just an FYI...my GG Grandmother was Ellen Fenaghty [Finnerty in the US] b Mar 1826 d 1906 and came to the US about 1867 - specifically Middlesex county in Massachusetts. She was in the Dromore West area [Poor Law Union] of Easky [parish] Co Sligo.

  • Hi Laurie,

Thanks for the info.  I did at one time find a town name but I cannot seem to find it in my notes now. when I do I will let you know.

Also coincidentally my Finnerty's emmigrated to Lowell, Middlesex, Ma. which is where they stayed and my father .was born.

p.s. After sending this reply, I did find the tidbit I was looking for. It was a post on ancestry.com regarding Hugh Finnerty.

It states that Hugh and his brother Frank were from Carrowmorris Co. Sligo!!

    Thanks again,

    Kristen

  • Hmmm... my Melly Fenaghty - widow of Thomas Fenaghty died [1864 at age 70] in Carrowpadeen.  It looks like it is further west then Carrowmorris.

I looked at a griffiths...quickly, and there were several families of May there, did not find a Finnerty or Fenaghty or Finaghty.

But I would suggest you search all those spellings. And Frank would probably be something else in Ireland - Francis?

Well, that was more difficult than it should have been. I can find a Francis 'Finnerty' born 19th April 1863 at Carrowmorrise. I can also find his siblings, Hugh and three others.. For some reason the father's surname is not recorded on these records.

    regards

  • Hello Peter,

I think they are one in the same, and my dates are more than likely incorrect.

My Frank's siblings were Hugh, Peter, Anna and Joseph, Though I have his birth year as 1867.  I know there was some confusion about Hugh's birth year as he was apparently not old enough to emmigrate so they lied about his birth year.
