I am trying to find where in County Sligo my third great-grandfather Martin Garvey, born 1800, came from.

He and his wife Esther Jones, and I believe their newborn son Thomas, emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1831-32.

Esther had a brother named William Jones, who is also in Nova Scotia by 1832.

Martin Garvey owned property and was a schoolmaster in Canada.

I was not able to find anything about him during a visit to the Genealogy section in the Archives in Dublin last fall, but thought I would try my luck here.

Thanks, Donalda Kelly

  • Hi Donalda,

I searched a site called rootsireland.ie for Martin Garvey born 1800 + - 5 years in SLIGO bot got no matches.

I then tried all counties and got 1 match - in 1804 Galway. I checked the parish and it is Moycullen RC.

The public member trees on ancestry that have the family have Martin & Esther born in Ireland and some say Sligo but there is no source cited. Are you sure it was Sligo/

  • Hi Col,

i am not 100 per cent that it was Sligo.  I really have very little to go on for any of my Irish ancestors.  (I am a Kelly)

Parish records here were destroyed by fire.

I will contact the parish group in Galway and see what I can learn from them.

thanks so much for your help!
