I've beeen searching, unsuccessfully, for nearly twenty years for my Quigley Irish roots. My Ancestry dna points to Co. Sligo as a likely place, and some very, very weak family lore backs that up. My great-great grandfather William H(?) Quigley was born about 1836 in Ireland and married a Catherine Denvir(Denver) (also born in Ireland) sometime around 1860 in NY (based on census data that shows an eldest daughter born about 1862 in NY). This same census indicates WM. Was a US citizen in 1870 which implies that he immigrated from Ireland no later than about 1860 or so. But I've been unable to find anything on his emigration from Ireland. The search goes on.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were no William Quigley baptismal records in Co. Sligo prior to 1870. Likely your William was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to the 1830s.

  • Dear M Quigley:

You might also consider checking the National Library of Ireland parish registers which may have parishes not listed on Roots Ireland.

In addition, John Grenham has a website that denotes the surnames and where they are situated in the mid19th century.  There are 29 households with the name Quigley in County Sligo.  It might be worth checking out.  Here is the link:  https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=Quigley

Roots Ireland is great for the large number of records that it holds, but unfortunately, they do not hold all parish registers.  However, some of them may be on the National Library of Ireland website, or held at the Church of Ireland Library (if Church of Ireland denomination).  I will ask one of our Sligo volunteers who may be able to narrow the search down for you.

I would recommend that you look at the list and the parishes where the surname existed in1858.  Thatmay be a good place to start.  I have screenshotted the photo for you, but you can use the above link to view it too.

Please get back to us with any questions.  Please also consider creating an Ancestor Profile on the XO Chronicles tab which is located at the top of this page.

Stay safe and best of luck with your search!

    All the best,

    Jane
