Wraystown, Mayo and Sligo

This post is in relation to "Wraystown" only: The Surnames of Ireland by Dr. Edward MacLysaght:

WRAY - This is sometimes a synonym of Rea and MacRea, but usually it is the name of Elizabethan settlers in Ulster. The name is now mainly found in Counties Derry and Donegal.

It does not appear in Tithe Records - 1823 - 1837, nor Griffith's Valuation of Townlands compiled in 1840's and 50's. 

Old Church of Ireland records may have a record of families in the particular area named "Wray" from whom it took its name.

I am looking for the place Wraystown.

Where was Wraystown in the 1830s in Ireland?

I have found several children of William Rogan (1810) family having been born there in the 1830s.

The Rogan family left there and settled in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

From what I can see Wraystown was a place name in the Kilmoremoy/Ballina area prior to 1851 when townlands were standardized. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmoremoy civil parish shows four Rogan records and they were all in Culleens townland  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilmoremoy.htm   Likely Wraystown was absorbed into Culleens when townlands were standardized.

As far as I can see Wraystown was always in Mayo.

Most histories state a new border was drawn between Sligo and Mayo in the late 1880s

Everything south of Enniscrone became part of Kilmermoy in Mayo.

Previously everything east of the Moy River was in Kilmermoy but in County Sligo.

I am wanting to know was Wraystown which is near Ballina part of Sligo in the 1830s.

See my message above. I could be wrong   As far as I can see Wraystown was always in Mayo. 

Right. the 1898 Local Government Act moved areas of Sligo into Mayo as you describe. There were also adjustments with Roscommon/Mayo and Galway/Roscommon.

I think Wraystown, Mayo and Sligo Ireland would be the correct entry for those in my Rogan family born in the 1830s.

Correction Again: Previously everything north of the Moy River, and south of Enniscrone was in Castleconnor Parish but in County Sligo.

Wraystown (Farranmorgan), Kilglass Parish, County Sligo. In County Sligo till about 1890.

Was then absorbed into Kilmermoy Parish in Mayo.

Wraystown (Farranmorgan), Kilmermoy Parish, County Mayo and Sligo is I believe the most correct way to record it at this time.

It is very close to Ballina on County Mayo.
