Dear Marguerite and Charley,

Hi! Greetings to you and Charley! Thank you for your replies to my query!

I have seen in the records a Daniel Quinlan in Feigh. He may be part of my family, but I do not have the link. I have only back to my 3g grandfather John Quinlan who married Mary Quigley in 1841. The Tipperary Family History Center did not have the birth/Baptism records for them or the names of their parents with the marriage when I got their research package in 2005. But they did have the Baptisms for their children (Timothy 1842, Thomas 1844, Michael 1846, Margaret 1848, Mary 1851, John 1854 and Patrick 1856), all born in Lisheen. I am descended from their son Michael. Michael had 13 children with the oldest son named Daniel and the youngest daughter named Bridget. Maybe those children were named after the Daniel Quinlan and Bridget Deegan in Feigh. Maybe the Feigh Daniel Quinlan could be a brother to John Quinlan, the husband of Mary Quigley.

John Quinlan and Mary Quigley’s children Timothy, Margaret and Patrick emigrated to America. Their son Michael moved to Birr. Their daughter Mary died in 1857. Their son John stayed in the house on lot 10. Their son Thomas went to America with Timothy, but then he returned and settled on lot 12. It gets a little confusing with so many having the same names.

Both of the Johns, Timothy, Thomas and Michael were all blacksmiths. I find it to be so wonderful to know that the old forge is still on the Lisheen property which I could see via the Google Satellite site. Is it all in ruins, as I cannot tell from the Google Satellite image? I hope to come visit Lisheen someday to see where my family lived and the forge where they worked. It is a joy to hear that Charley lives on the property!

I thank you both so much again for your messages and look forward to hearing from you when you get a chance.

    Kind Regards, Joanne

  • Hi Joanne,

Thank you for your reply & also the further information.  We have arranged to look at the parish records tomorrow morning ( Friday 8th) & hope to be able to trace the family of Thomas & Maria (nee Cahill).  It turns out that Maria was actually a Grand Aunt of Marguerite's father.  He remembers visiting her with his mother as a child, he also remembers Timothy being referred to as "little Tiimy Quinlan" but never met him, John or Mary Rose.  We will also try follow through the Birr records as regards the Michael that you mention.

If you are a Facebook user you might like to link in with our village page for which we have included a link to in this message.

    Kind Regards

    Margeurite & Charley

  • Dear Marguerite and Charley Tighe,

Hi! This is so exciting to hear that Maria Cahill was the grand aunt of Marguerite’s father and that he remembers Timothy referred to as “little Timmy Quinlan”! We could be cousins! It will be interesting to know what became of little Timmy Quinlan and his siblings. I am very grateful that you will be able to look at the parish records for my Quinlans tomorrow!

You won’t have to look into Michael, as I have alot on him. But, there are 2 of his children that I don’t know what became of them. I wasn’t going to trouble you with them, but if you wish to look into the Birr records, I would be very delighted if you can (I was going to contact Birr in the future). His daughter Margaret Quinlan was born in Ballycapple on July 7, 1878. By the time of the 1911 census she was deceased and she wasn’t listed on the 1901 with the family. I had thought that a record of a Margaret Quinlan married in Birr in 1898 to James Daly was her, but when I received the GRO record, her father was listed as John (publican) instead of Michael (blacksmith). I don’t know if she died in Tipperary or Birr, as Michael Quinlan was living in the Birr area by 1894. The Margaret Quinlan who died in 1898 in Birr in Clonoghill Cemetery is not her (could be an aunt to my Michael Quinlan, but don’t have the link---she was never in GRO for me to know who were her parents, but she was listed as living on Pound Street on the cemetery record and Michael was listed on Pound Street at that same time on his daughter’s Baptism record----can’t prove that they lived at the same residence).

Another of his daughters, Rosana/Rose Quinlan and her children are hard to find, also. She had 4 children all born in Birr and illegitimate: Michael Quinlan Sept 1, 1901, William Quinlan Dec 7, 1905 (who died Nov 29, 1906 and is buried in Clonoghill Cemetery), John Quinlan around 1909 (not in GRO or rootsireland, but he is on the 1911 census as a grandson to Michael, so he may not be Rosana’s son although she was living with Michael per that census) and Timothy Quinlan Jan 2, 1917. The last record that I have of her or the sons is the emigration of Michael in 1926 when they were living on Rock Lane.

Let me know how I can repay you for all this kindness in locating my family and what happened to them.

I am not on Facebook, but now will think about signing up so I can see more about your village, where my family once lived. Thanks for letting me know.

        Kind regards!

  • Hi Joanne,

Just a quick check-in to say that we are still researching the records, some of the registers weren't available at the parish office last Friday but we hope to haveaccess to them this week.  I hope to speak to the Birr Parish priest today & follow through on that end.

Would you mind sending a quick "hello" email to aglishcloghane@irelandxo.com so we have your email address.  I want to send you some attachments with information & it is easier to do so by direct email than through this site due to the different settings.

    Hope all is well

    Marguerite

  • Dear Marguerite,

Hi! I am doing well. And you & Charlie?

I will send my e-mail address to the one that you listed, so you can send the attachments. It all sounds so exciting! That will be great if you can get to Birr, also. How close is Birr to Aglishcloghane? I’m hoping to come in Sept 2014 and want to visit both towns, since Michael had lived in Birr. I am descended from his son John, who is the one of the 9 children that emigrated to America (Philadelphia area, which is where I live).

My sons will be coming to visit during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday (Nov 28), so I will be able to share with them all that you have told me.

        I’ll send my e-mail shortly.

        Regards---Joanne
