Tracking some of my mother's people back into Ireland.  I have a photo of a certified birth certificate for Edmund Connell, son of Edmund and Mary (Morris) Connell born 23 July 1874 in Earlshill.  Bridget Connell was present at the birth. The certification of the birth certificate was done on 15 May 1940.  The birth was registered in the district Ballingarry, in the Superindent of Registrar District of Callan, in the County of Tipperary.  Once in America the family went by the name "O'Connell and young Edmund was known as "Edward".

I am hoping to find the parish the Connell's belonged to before moving to the United States somewhere around 1879-1880.  Also looking for relatives that can before or are still living in the area.  Any help would be grately appreciated.

  • Earlshill townland (placename database) is in Ballingarry civil parish, and also the Catholic Parish of the same name. The townland is located about 10km (~6 miles) south east of the town of Littleton Co. Tipperary. The baptism for Edward/Edmond took place in Ballingarry Catholic parish the same day he was born, on the 23rd July 1874 (NLI RC Register images - right hand page near the top).

Be careful searching for references to Ballingarry - there are several other parishes named Ballingarry in other counties.

For reference here's a copy the same civil birth record for Edward with original GRO register image on the IrishGenealogy website. The civil registration district is Callan which although based in Co. Kilkenny also covered part of Co. Tipperary.

There are a number of possible siblings to Edward showing in civil extracted birth records on FamilySearch - Mary 2 July 1872, Anne 23 March 1878, Margaret 12 March 1880. This collection does not include all civil births, so there could be other children - let me know if you are interested in the detailed birth records for the siblings from the GRO website..

There is a promising possible marriage for Edmond and Mary in 'Gurtnahoe and Glengoole' Catholic parish (see left hand page), which is immediately north of Ballingarry. The date is 24th October 1858 - unfortunatly early Catholic marriage records dont include as many details as the equivalent civil records, so no father's name, occupation etc. If this marriage is correct, which seems likely, then there are probably additional children before Ann, and also before the start of civil birth records in 1864.

  • I would be thrilled to have any of the information on Edmond's siblings if you have easy access to it.

  • These are the siblings I found civil births for :

    Catherine - 22nd February 1866
    Richard - 3rd March 1868
    John - 6th Jun 1870
    Mary - 2nd Jul 1872
    Edmond (23rd July 1874)
    Anne - 23rd March 1878
    Margaret - 13 Mar 1880

All with parents Edward/Edmond Connell and Mary Morris, most mention Earlshill, place of birth on Anne's birth looks like Ballyphilip. The Registar for Callan district for this time had terrible hand-writing!

There's an Edmond 'Connill' occupation carpenter of about the right age living at Earlshill townland on the 1901 census - presumably your Edmond had left well before then ?

  • Thanks for the information!  This is clearing up some questions in the family.  I am going to plug this into the family tree and see what shakes out.

Edmond 'Connill in 1901 has to be someone else.  I am trying to nail down when the family came across to Brooklyn, New York.  The information I have is that happened sometime between 1880 and 1885, I will be attempting to find out exactly when and where in the next few weeks.

I am really grateful for the assistance.  I need to plan a trip to come over to Ireland.  My Aunt is making the trip in June of this year as her 70th birthday trip.  I will be passing along locations she may want to visit that have a connection to the O'Connell family.
