My Leary Ancestors were primarily in and around Ballybacon. I'm looking for a way to track down descendants who stayed there.

Last records i find are the 1911 census.

Is there a local newspaper I might utilize to put inquiries in? The church was no help.

  • Patsy:

Here is a link to the parish of Ardfinnan which has the Ballybacon church as part of the cluster.

I don't know if you are on Facebook but there is a Ballybacon Catholic Church Facebook page ( not a lot of activity) but there is an e-mail address that you could use to ask about descendants.

    But thanks for responding.

  • Patsy,

You could try an ad in the local papers.  Both papers are run by the same company.

  • John Leary with all his children is one for certain, his father and my great great grandfather, Dermot, Darby, Jeremiah Leary were brothers.

Ellen Leary is my great great grandmother. She is there with her daughter Mary Kennedy and her children. I forget if Patrick is on that one. But there is a blind brother Patrick who never married.

  • Patsy,

I got onto google and typed in  "O leary Knockballiniry".  this came back with a few hits for O learys in Knockballinery.  Some of them have phone numbers and some are on facebook.   Many original families still live in this townsland so the chances of one of them being related to you are huge.

My family come from about two miles down the road, and I could safely say that most of the families in that townsland today are direct descendants from Griffith valuation times.

  • I shall try that.  Just the sort of info I'm looking for. There were 8 brothers and I'm sure some children married andstayed there.
