Did they marry Flynn from Kilworth? If so they went from Halifax Nova Scotia to Potosi Missouri,

I do not know if any married a Flynn. John who immigated married in the US in the state of Illinois. His brothers names were Edmond, Patrick, and James. All were born between 1825 and 1833 and baptized in Ballybacon.

There may be a connection between the Murphys of Raheen (and other Murphys around Ballybacon) as well as Condons and Gormans and the Walshes. I have a copy of Pp 458 - 463 of The Christian Brothers' Educational Record of 1939  (Bray Printing Co. Ltd. 39 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin) is a short account of the life of Brother John Francis Murphy (1869-1938), my GG Uncle. I have found a number of errors including his name - he was James Francis not John Francis. However, two sentences may be relevant and of interest:

"Father Cantwell encouraged the young men of his parish to marry into Catholic families in the localities where they lived, and in this way the Murphys became united to the families of the Condons, the Walshes, the O'Connor's and the Gormans..."

and

"Father Walsh, for many years Parish Priest Townsville and Father Nugent, who died in Rockhampton, were cousins."

Br. Francis in 1929 on his first visit to Ireland since leaving some 35 years before, also makes mention of several Walshes in a letter to one of his sisters in Australia. He was obviously very excited and seems to mention half the population of Ireland, though, and I'm still trying to work out who's who, who are related and who are old friends or acquaintances.

Welsh5060..my great-great-great grandfather was also John Welsh. Scott County, IL. His parents were Patrick Walsh and Mary Lewis. Please let me know if it is the same person. Thanks!

Tom - Thanks so much for the information and follow through, after talking to Liam. I feel that I have to be related to the Ballybacon and Cahir area Walshes but would love to find a branch that would be direct to me. In the Saint Mary’s cemetery there is a James Walsh, who died in 1903 at the age of 69, and he was from Cahir Abbey. My great grandfather, John, had a younger brother James baptized in December of 1833. He died in June of 1903 which would make him 69 at the time of his death.  Do you know of any of his present family and would it be reasonable to assume, that this James, would have been my great grandfather’s brother? Tom - Thanks so much for your reply.  Do you know if there are any descendents of James Walsh and Mary Coffey remaining in Cahir?  That line looks like it could be the best hope of finding direct family.  Would many families name their oldest sons after the father’s oldest son?  James’ oldest son was Edmond, who reported Jame’s death. Jame’s oldest brother was an Edmond.  Thanks again for your help - Pat

Tom - Thanks so much for your replies!  I am excited, but cautious, about finding a direct link to the Walshes in Cahir Abbey.  I look forward to finding out about what you can find during you late January trip.  I have made contact with Walshes in Cahir Ballymacadam and also Ballybacon.  Both groups feel that we are distantly related but not directly.  One of the Ballybacon contacts presently lives in Tullamore and had spent a tremendous amount of time in family research.  I will be glad to put you in touch if you desire.  Thanks again - Pat

Hell Tom - I am sorry I have not followed up since your January visit.  I have got some recent inspiration recently as I have found that there were 3 Lewis families in Curragh in one of the censuses.  My great great grandmother was Mary Lewis. Could some of those in the census be related,  Thanks in advznce for any help or suggestions - Pat Welsh

I'm a cousin to Pat Walsh - we both are descended from John Walsh (Parents are Mary Lewis and Patrick Walsh).

It is interesting to learn Mary Lewis was from the same area...I wasn't sure if she was from County Cork or Tipperary. Lewis isn't exactly an Irish name.

It's been quite difficult finding out the names of Patrick Walsh's parents, as well as Mary Lewis's parents. I'm hoping to return soon to Ireland and plan on doing a bit more research.

As I am sick with a cold, I've been doing some research. I think...stress, think...I found James Walsh and his wife Mary in the 1901 census. He's listed as living in CaherAbbey Upper. Not 100% sure but the timeline (birth date) lines up with our James Walsh. Also, I did find a Richard Lewis and Joanne Noonan living in Ardfinnan (I think)...they had a son named Lawrence Lewis who was baptized in 1811. I'm wondering if there is a connection to our Mary Lewis.

Anyway, back to bed with some hot tea and honey. Take care!

       Thanks so much for your hard work!  I am excited about the Walsh family in Cahir Abbey Upper, if they are from our James Walsh it would be the first relatives that our family (which is Carla’s too) have found still in Ireland.  If we can find a way to contact some of the Lewis’, still in Ardfinan, that could lead to some others.  As Carla has stated, it had been very difficult to find the parents of Patrick Walsh or Mary Lewis. To this point it has been equally difficult to find their children, other than our great grandfather, John Walsh (Welsh).  Thanks again to you both- Pat

It does look like the James Walsh I posted about is our relative. I found baptismal records for his children...Mary Walsh is the reporter of the births and is listed as his mother. The wife's name is indeed Mary Coffey. I agree...if we can track down the descendants of this branch, we'll make contact with our cousins.

Here are the baptismal records. I haven't found the one for the third sibling, but I'll keep searching.

Carla - I am excited about Tom checking the Walsh home at Cahir Abbey Upper.  It would be the end of a long pursuit to find out what happened to the family of my great grandfather, John Welsh (Walsh).  I hope we can find a way to check on the Lewises living in the Ardfinnan area which could give us a lead to great grandfather’s mother.  Thanks, Pat
