Hello,

I've found a headstone at the Killaldriffe Cemetery in Co.Tipperary for Margaret McCarthy née Power who we think is our 3xgreat grandmother and would love to be able to identify the townland where her husband Michael McCarthy lived. So far we have deciphered -
“Erected by
Mich McCarthy
Of ………………
In memory of his beloved wife
Marg’ McCarthy
alias Power
Who departed Nov 22nd 1852
aged 52 years”

We have located some family baptisms in Bansha parish records and her daughter Catherine married in that parish in 1855. The online parish records don’t record where people where living at the time of a baptism or marriage.

Looking for some help to identify where they lived in the Parish.

Thank you, Michael

  • Mike B,

Finding the exact location of where kin lived in the Bansha area is something I have been dealing with for the last 14 years.  My gg grandfather, John W. Butler and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Buckley were married in the church at Bansha.  They had 5 girls that were baptiized at the same church, with the last child Bridget born and baptized in 1851.  In 1853 and 1854 they left Ireland and came to the USA.  Bridget the youngest did not come to the USA with them and apparently died in Ireland or on the crossing by ship.  I can find no record of her being buried in the cemetery by the church in Bansha.

As to the McCarthy surname I know very little about Catharine McCarthy who married Patrick Beatty.  Catharine is my gg grandmother.  I know that Patrick was from County Mayo, but I have no information on where Catharine came from in Ireland.  Catherine and Patrick had 4 children. Mary, the first born married my great Grandfather James Joseph  Butler,  The 2nd and third born bacame Catholic Nuns in Indiana, and taught school in Indiana, and both are buried in the convent cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana.  The 4th daughter entered the convent, but dropped out and returned to Richmond, Indiana and lived in that are the rest of her life.  My great grandmother Mary had two children, my grandfather John Clare Butler, and his sister Pearl Clementine Butler.  I know very little about Catharine McCarthy or where she was born in Ireland.  I guess maybe she was from County Mayo as her husband was from that county as that shows on his citizenship papers.  Sorry I can't help with that info you are looking for.

My name is Bernard St. Clare Butler, Jr. and my email address I use for genealogy is    stclareusa@hotmail.com     and you may contact me at that address directly.

Irish blessing to you and yours,

    Bernie Butler, Jr.

  • Hello Cordangan,

Thank you for this information about Clohermagh. I was wondering if you were able to interpret that from the photo that I posted or if you had seen the actual headstone in person.

I don't mean to sound doubtful but just trying to clarify your source.

    Thank you once again.

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Hello Bernie,

It doesn't sound like the same McCarthy family I'm afraid. My Michael & Margaret did have a daughter called Catherine but she is the one who married in Bansha parish in 1855 to William Lynch. They later came to Australia with their children in 1863. I agree with you about the Bansha parish I am still trying to understand how it was constructed and I understand that prior to 1858 it was standalone and not connected to Kilmoyler. Whereas this burial ground was closer to Kilmoyler church.

All the best with your search.

  • Hello Cordangan,

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I see that there was a Michael Carthy with land in Clohermagh at the time of Griffiths Valuation and I also noticed that name in Barnlough as well, was that the same person? In the last day or so I have discovered that one of his sons who came to Australia said at his 1863 marriage that he was from Barnlough but the other 'proven' son that came here only ever said on marriage records (he married twice) that he was from Co.Tipperary. There are at least four people here in Australia trying to research these two sons and a possible third one who came to Australia in 1850/60s period. If you would like to share more on our respective McCarthys my email address is 'michaelandwendy@bigpond.com' . I would love to hear from you when you have the time.

    Kind regards

    Michael
