I know that John Hunt and his family came to live in ,Kilmore in Victoria Austrlaia, in 1858. John had married Anne O'brien 10/2/1828 in Cappawhite ,their 9 children were baptised in Cappagh. John's trade was a cooper, he worked as a cooper when he got to Kilmore. I would like to be able to be sure of John's birth ,but can't. On his death cert it states his father was "John"( a farmer) and mother "Ann" and he was born about 1797. If any one knows any more about this family's life in Cappawhite I would love the help. Janet

Janet:
I looked at the Tithe listings for Cappagh townland in Toem civil parish and there were five Hunt records. The John Hunt listed is a Rev. leasing five acres of land. There is a Fitzmaurice Hunt with 66 acres, a Phenaus Hunt with 12 acres and then a James Hunt and Mat Hunt with smaller holdings.

You won't find Cappawhite baptismal records back to 1797 so no baptismal record for John Hunt.

Thanks , I do have the Tithe listings, and some have added the Rev John Hunt as his father, but there is no mention of him in anything I have found on my John. I'm sure they would have been proud of the Reverand and it would have been in his obituary, at least.

Hi Janet and Roger, to the best of my knowledge there is a vault to the Hunts in the Graveyard in Toem.
Will search for it I have some records for this graveyard. Toem was civil parish for the area.
Also I feel the Hunts were in the area until recently

Hi again Roger and Janet, went through the synopsis of headstones for graveyard in Toem and yes there was vault there to Hunt,s, it was not possible to see inscription.
I searched for the marriage of John Hunt on www.registersnli,i.e. on the date you gave hoping it would give address, it did not, but the next two entries have a Harry Hunt as witnesses.
I feel there are still Hunt,s in the area, perhaps an ad in the Cappawhite notes in The Local Nationalist
Newspaper would help, Let me know what you think.Christina Ireland reaching out Volunteer

Thanks Christina,
I know that there are a few HUNT families in the area. I just find it hard to prove who I belong to.
I think that would be a great idea. How would I go about doing that?

There are at least two Hunt families that I know about who emigrated to Australia from Cappawhite. 1) One was my g-g-grandfather''s sister, Elizabeth Hunt McClean (b 1811) who emigrated to Australia with her husband and children in 1841. She stayed there for ten years and then emigrated to San Francisco. 2) Harriet Hunt (b 1816) married Patrick Baragry in Tipperary and all of their chldren emigrated to Australia in the 1850s. There are multiple other Hunts who emigrated from Cappawhite to Australia. I'm in touch with a Hunt in Melbourne who knows more than anyone about this. I'm hoping there's a way for you to private message me via this site so I can put you in touch with him.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for the help, my email is auntyjam@hotmail.com
The fact that "Hunt" is a common name does make it much harder, so thanks again for the offer.

Hi Janet, I sent you a pdf with family trees and a document which shows how your John Hunt is connected to the larger Hunt clan in Tipperary. There are many Hunt families in Ireland, but many of the Hunts in Tipperary and Limerick as all descended from the same Captain John Hunt who arrived in Ireland with Oliver Cromwell. You and I are both descended from this man and, in fact, we are both in the same branch of the family, What gives that away is the name "Damer." That name only appears in our branch of the family. According to the family tree, your ancestor John Hunt, is actually John Damer Hunt, son of Rev. John Hunt (descended from Captain John Hunt's grandson, Henry Hunt of Ligadoon) and Mary Ann Hunt (descended from Capt. John Hunt's grandson, John Hunt of Glangoole). Rev John and Mary Ann Hunt were cousins. Please let me know if you did not get these files and I will find another way to get them to you. Best regards, Kate Nelson

Hi Janet, I'm researching the same Kilmore Hunts as you ... I'm pretty sure our John Snr (1797 - 1883) isn't the Rev John's son as he's not listed as one in Burke's "A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Ireland". The Rev John only has a Vere, Fitzmaurice, Mary Anne, Whilelmina and Fanny Margaret listed as his children. I'd be interested if you find anything definite about his parentage.
Regards,
Amanda

Is there anyone still monitoring this thread? I am very interested in the DeVere-Hunt line. I also have a connection to descendants of Harriet Hunt and Patrick Baragry.

Hi Kerry,
It may be quiet but I think we are all still looking, not an easy lot to find!!
I have a DNA match to a Stephen Baragry on GEDmatch .
I'm in Melbourne at auntyjam@hotmail.com .

I, too, am connected via DNA to Stephen Baragry and other descendants of Harriet Hunt in Australia. There is a group of Hunts who are working together to flesh out this family. if you want to join us, Kerry, please email me (extkate@mac.com). We have Hunts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the U.S. working on it.

Thank you to both of you. I will send each of you an email and we can connect that way.
For anyone else interested, I have DNA matches to descendants of John DeVere-Hunt and Catherine Kennedy from Tipperary. I don't know if it is from the Devere-Hunt side or the Kennedy side. I suspect the latter.
I also have connections to descendants of Vere Dawson Hunt. Two of my Bull (from Liverpool, NSW) distant cousins, Alice and Nellie Bull, married descendants of Harriet Hunt and Patrick Baragry. Mortimer Downes descended from Denis Baragry and Mary Connors through their daughter, Elizabeth. Edward Humphreys descended from Denis Baragry and Mary Connors through their daughter, Mary.
Looking forward to learning more.
