We are planning a trip to Upper Tipperary and Castletownarra this summer and Will be there August 2-4. We would love to make a local history connection. My Great great Grandfather was Joseph Ryan born around 1828. He married Nancy (Anna) Brien also thought to be froom the same area and same year of birth.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Records for the RC parish of Castletownarra/Portroe do not begin until 1849. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0802
I searched on Roots Ireland and found an 1855 marriage between a Joseph Ryan and Margaret Brien in the Youghalarra RC church which is the RC parish to the east of Castletownarra and likely where the Briens were from. The only caveat is that the bride is shown as Margaret Brien. Let me know if this is the correct family.

Thank you for looking this up for us. I am sorry I neglected to mention that Joseph Ryan and Nancy Brien were -to ably not married until after they arrived in the USA. The story my father told was that Joseph immigrated as a child and came over as an indentured servant along with a twin brother but we have never found any verification of that. I have wondered if they may have been sent from a poor house. I am just hoping that a local historian might meet with us and help us learn of the area and surname Ryan even if we can't find my particular relative.
