  • Hi Sue!

Sorry for the delayed response. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located the baptismal records for James and William but not for other children.

Did you know that the wife of Eugene Mahoney was Catherine Cahill or did you look for baptismal records for children of Eugene Mahoney and found these records in Clogheen with Catherine Cahill as the wife/mother.

Here is a link to the 19th century Clogheen parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0116    You will note from the index that there is a one year gap in baptismal records from June 1814-1June 1815. Possibly Catherine was baptized in that gap period and a record will not be available. You may want to scan the register for late 1815 into 1816 to see if you can locate a record for Catherine.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • So sorry not to have answered before but have only just seen your response!!

Yes i think Catherine Cahill was Eugenes wife and have seen the other childrens baptisms.

Catherine is a mystery as she marries Thomas Povey in london in 1838 and has 3 surviving children with him. Thomas is back in Kent where his mother luives by 1841. There is a Caroline on the census with the 2 children. This could be a catherine misheard by the recorder. She never appears on another record that i have found!

She is staying in london with Joanne Mcarthy when she loses her last baby and joanne reports the birth and death in June 1849.

I have tried to rack her after that without success and so have tried to go back and see if Joanne was a cousin or friend from Ireland. She is never on a census post 1841 so not sure of her place of birth. Her fathers name on her wedding certificate is Eugene.

I am at a bit of a loss as to where to look for more on the eugene family and fine the latin words a bit tricky so any suggestions you have will be gratefully received!!
