Hello,
I am hoping that someone might be able to help with information about Minchin Burgess . His daughter Jane, born about 1793 married Tappin Rudd , Abbey Mill owner in Roscrea. It is recorded on Jane’s tombstone in Modreeny that her father was Minchin Burgess from Cloughjordan .

In the List of Freeholders of the County of Tipperary in the year 1776 Minchin Burgess as well as John Burgess Snr and John Burgess Jnr are listed, each with an abode and freehold land at Cloughjordan.

I can find no information on either John and only the tombstone mention of Minchin.

Is it possible to locate where their freehold land was located? We’re they able to sustain that ownership?
who were their families? - are there any records or references to them in history logs or journal articles?

any information will be greatly appreciated. I would love to visit Cloughjordan to find this information myself but it is unfortunately impossible at the present time .

thank you .

  • In Griffith's Valuation of Offaly in 1854, there was a Minchin Burgess, likely a son of your Minchin:

  • Thank you Patricia,

I had found that record and wondered whether he was potentially a grandson of perhaps the Minchin or John Jnr I’ve listed - it’s hard to know . I will have to try back tracking the 1854 Minchin Burgess if records exist for his birth or baptism.
I will check Offaly records which I haven’t searched in detail.
I did notice that the 1854 Minchin Burgess was a tenant on his land whereas the three 1776 Burgess men had freehold land at Cloughjordan. I’m wondering why the situation would have changed if he is a descendant ?

is there such a thing as a map of freehold land held in Cloughjordan in the 1770s ? Can anyone tone tell me where I would find such a map please?

    thanks for any assistance!
