Hi,

I have come across various family records in Drom Parish with the location being written as KILL.

I am assuming this is an abbreviation.

I don't know if it is Killahagen or Kilvilcorris or another place altogether.

I am hoping a local person will know the answer.

Thanks in advance

Kathleen Fanning

Depends on the year you are looking for as to what results you will get.

This link is 1823 to 1837

A name would help in searching.

  • Thanks Margot.

I have tracked down the abbreviation Kill to Kilvacorus.

In the Baptism records Kill and sometimes Kile is used but Killahagan the other possibility is always written in full which narrows it down.

Tracing some Fanning records, I have John Fanning died in Kilvilcorris in 1876 and six of his children were baptized in Kill, sometime entered as Kile or Kille. His son Wlliam baptized in Kille died in Kilvilcorris.

I am hoping a local person can confirm that Kill is an abbreviation of Kilvilcorris. I am Australian.

Sorry I havn't replied, there is a problem on this site, we don't get alerts for replies, they are trying to fix it.
I have attached a file, for a John Fanning's death 1876....is this your John?  Was Margaret his wife?

  • Hi Margot,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've been away.

I have made a mistake. Daniel Morrissey and Catherine Fanning of Lissaroon were married in Drom Parish in 1838 but lived in Kilkillahara in Loughmore West.

I have been trying to track down the Morrissey family.

Catherine and Daniel had eight children. Catherine died in 1856 after giving birth. She is buried in Ballycahill Cemetery.

These are the Baptism records for their children:

    Bridget 17 Feb 1841

    Judy 21 May 1843

    Honora 26 Dec 1844

    Mary 28 Dec 1846

    Catherine 17 Apr 1849

    Margaret 11 Jun 1851

    Daniel 8 Aug 1853

    William 22 Mar 1856

Unlikely that Daniel emigrated with such young children, one a baby. The usual thing would have been for him to remarry as soon as respectably possible.

But I have not been able to find anything on the Morrisseys other than a probable marriage of one daughter Judy to Michael Bourke in 1861.

There are no Morrisseys in either the 1901 or 1911 census records and none buried in Loughmore Graveyard.

To answer your question, my grgrgrandfather William Fanning emigrated to Victoria in Australia in 1841.

The John Fanning and Margaret Fanning you found are most likely are related but the records don't start earlier enough to prove a connection.

Thanks for replying. I'll post this in the Loughmore Group.

    Regards
