Hello everyone.

I am in London and am researching my Irish family roots. Please can you help me.

In the Irish Census of 1901, in Ballysorrel a John Roe is listed, aged 82, born in 1818. I understand he died in 1903 in the Roscrea Registration Area. I imagine he died in Ballysorrell ,Templemore, Tipperary.

Has anyone got any information on this John Roe, Born 1818. From where did he originate? Who did he marry and when?

How many children did he have and what was  their names?

I intend to order his death certificate with the hope it will assis me me in some way.

I was once told he lived in Killanovogue. The family moved to Ballysorrell in about 1860. I also understand that Loran House is not far frm where he originated. However, all this may be incorrect. He may be buried in Bourney Church of Ireland graveyard. If so what inscription is on the headstone?

I know he had two sons, William born in 1853 and John born in 1858. I image he may have had other children

The family still live in Ballysorrell.

Please assist me with information.

Kind Regards.

Philip Roe

  • Philip:

There is a John Roe in the 1850 Griffiths Valuation in Gortnagowna townland in Killavinogue parish. Possibly this is your John.

I looked at Roots Ireland and found baptismal records for five Roe children with a father John and mother shown as Alice Roe. They were all baptized in the Roscrea Church of Ireland parish by the rector William Roe. The address was shown as Kilcreamon. Not sure this is the correct family. In any event, the children were Peter 1849, Charlotte 1852, Elizabeth 1855, John 1860 and William 1862.

    Is this a different family?

  • There is still a Roe homestead in Ballysorrel, Clonmore, occupied by the wife of the late William Roe, now Mrs Sadie Dudley. William & his wife Sadie had no children. William's sister Betty Dudley has also passed away. The last Roe from Ballysorrell, John, died on 5th August 2016 and is interred in Rathsaran Cemetery, Rathdowney. His address when he died was Knockiel, Rathdowney, Co. Laois. He is survived by his wife Caroline, sons Wesley & Wade & daughter Soyna. Father of William, Betty & John I would think is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Templemore.
