I'm planning to visit Ireland in 2017 and wonder if there are any descendants of my great grandmother, Margaret Ryan born in 1865 in Killea, still in the area. Her parents were Anthony Ryan and Anne Quinn who were married in Templemore in July 1841.

  • Dear Stacey, Thank you for your reply. Yes, The name on Anne Quinn's Church Baptism record is Quinn with her father being Timothy Quinn and mother Mary Byrne. The date of Baptism is 7th April, 1817, Sponser being Elizabeth Gunnen.

The date of Anne Quinn's marriage to Anthony Ryan was 23 July 1841. Their witnesses were John Mara and Ellen Quinn.

We visited the area last month when we were in Ireland, now back in Australia,  and found the areas where they would have lived but unfortunately no  descendants. Ryan and Quinn are very common names around Killea and Templemore.

I notice that your surname is Ryan. Perhaps you are a distant relative?

    Regards,

    Biddy p

    Hi Biddy P,

Sorry I am a few years late. My name is Thomas Quinn, my great Grandfather was called Philip Quinn, he was originally from Killea but moved (not too far) to Skehanagh (near Templemore). We are still there. I attach the 1911 census with remaining Quinns in Killlea.

    Regards,

     Tom

  • Hi Tom,

Thank you for your reply. We did visit Killea and Templemore a couple of years ago but didn't meet any Quinns or Ryans. However we saw the area where they came from.

According to my records Timothy Quinn married Mary Byrne

They had Elizabeth, Anne and Thomas Quinn.

    Anne Quinn married Anthony Ryan

They had several children including Margaret Ryan who migrated to Australia and married James Traynor. They were my great grandparents.

The Quinns and Ryans came from Killea and Templemore. We are most likely related somehow. Are you on Ancestry as I have done my DNA there?

    Kind regards,

    Biddy P (Australia)

    Hi Biddy P,

Apologies I am late coming back with a reply. I am not on the Ancestry database, I've always been a little nervous about using the service, but I am very curious to see if we are related so I think I will do it in next few weeks.

I searched in 1901 census National archives, only Quinns that turn up in Killea in 1901 are at link below (and attached pdf). The search function on National archive site is very sensitive to townsland names, so they could be still be other Quinns around locally in 1901.  This is the family where my great grandfather came out of. I know I am missing a piece to understand how it links up to Quinns you mention. Complete guess but wondering if Anne Quinns brother Thomas was the father to my great grandfather Philip Quinn (and husband to Bridget Quinn listed in 1901 census), he is not captured in 1901 census. I'll ask around family to see if anyone knows his first name.

Oh one more thing, a quick search of Ryan in Killea in 1901 (attached) throws up a Anne Ryan widowed aged 80 (if same Anne Quinn I would have her down as 83/84 based on your info above, but maybe its her), with a son named Richard. Did your great grandmother Margaret have a brother named Richard?

The same Richard Ryan pops up again in 1911 census (attached) aged 68 (even though 1901 census had him at age 40!). He is single, does not appear to have had a family. This might explain why you struggled to find anyone.

    Regards,

     Tom

  • Hi Tom, I don't know if Margaret Ryan had a brother called Richard. However Anne Quinn did have a brother called Thomas who may be your Great great grandfather. The only family I have been able to find for Timothy Quinn who married Mary Byrne in approx 1814 were their children Elizabeth born 1815,  Anne born 1817 and Thomas born 1819. Anne Quinn married Anthony Ryan in 1841 and had Margaret Ryan, born 1845 and who came to Australia in 1865.                                                                           I have done my DNA on Ancestry and you can see my public family tree under Sheila_Duke. Regards, Sheila
