Hello,

I am trying to prove/disprove that the Philip Blake born to David Blake and Johanna Meagher and baptized May 11, 1824 in Loughmore and Castleiny is my great-great-great-grandfather.

My Philip Blake was born in County Tipperary in the 1820s.  He came to Muskegon, Michigan, USA in 1846.  There was a David Blake who moved to Muskegon from Canada in 1851.  On his death record, his parents are listed as David and Hannah Blake.  David Blake and Johanna Meagher moved to Canada from Ireland.

I know I am related to David and/or Johanna through the DNA test at Ancestry.com, as some of their descendants show up on my list of relatives.  I'd love to know if their son, Philip, and my ancestor, Philip, are the same person.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland has eight baptismal records for children of David Blake and  Judith  Maher from 1808-1827 in Loughmore RC parish including Philip. Here is the link http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0254  to the parish register if you want to check the records. Possibly the records are in Latin.

Do you know the names of any of Philip's siblings? Catherine, Jeremiah, Mary, John, Michael, John and Patrick are the records on Roots. Likely the first John died young. If you can match up some of the sibling names, likely you have the correct Philip.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for your help!  I don't know the names of any of my Philip's siblings, unfortunately.  I am related to descendants of the Michael you mentioned based on the Ancestry.com DNA test.

David and Johanna (Judith) were in Canada by the 1830s.  Three of their children went to the US, Patrick, Philemon, and David.  I'm thinking Philemon is Philip.

The book in which I read the above information doesn't list where in the US those three children lived.  I know there was a David Blake, born in Canada to a David and Hannah Blake (both born in Ireland), who lived in the same town in the US as my Philip, but I can't prove that they were brothers or that that David is the same David metioned above.  I believe he is, though.

Do you know of any other way I could figure out if these two Philips are the same person?

    Thank you so much,

  • Jenny:

No other suggestions but more matches with descendants of siblings of Philip would seem to confirm the connection. Have you loaded your DNA to Gedmatch? www.gedmatch.com    Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can load your data and see if you match someone who tested with another DNA company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch). It expands your match pool.

  • Thank you, Roger!

I did upload my DNA to Gedmatch, and I think it's a wonderful site.  I really do believe my Philip and the Philip who was a son of David and Johanna Blake are the same person.

Thank you again for all your help,

  • Hi again,

Another one of David and Johanna's descendants showed up on my dad's list of relatives based on the Ancestry.com DNA test.  She showed up as a high match, higher than I would have expected if we were not, also, descendants of David and Johanna.  This has made me more confident to add them to my tree.

Thank you for all of your help!
