Does anyone know anything about John Sweeney/Sweeny, born somewhere in Tipperary about 1842 and migrated to Australia at some time in the 1860s?  He married Maria Crowley in Mudgee, New South Wales in 1868, had 3 boys - Edward, John Patrick and Jeremiah - then died in 1872 by being accidentally killed by a dray.  He was 30 on his death certificate and his parents were Edward Sweeney and Margaret Brennan.  I have been unable to find a John Sweeney with a mother called Margaret Brennan (although lots with a father Edward/Edmund).  The closest I have come is Margaret Banon in Thurles, but I can't find any evidence that they had a son John.  His wife Maria was born in Australia and the Crowleys were from Cork, so he wouldn't have known her before moving to Mudgee.

Thanks

  • Hi Shelly, is this lady part of your family?
    see below.......Hannah.

I picked up Mary on the 22nd of October 1846 (was she known as Hannah? and another Mary on the 22nd October 1844.    Both in Thurles.

  • Hi Margot

Thanks for finding this for me.  I have looked at the handwritten passenger lists and found that the John Sweeny who was with Hannah on the Peerless was from Thurles, but his father had no name (but dead) and his mother was Catherine. Also this one could read and write and my John signed his marriage certificate with his mark.  I thought Hannah's family was the most likely so I obtained her marriage certificate where her mother's surname was "Barnham", probably written by an Englishman who didn't understand Irish pronunciation very well.  Hannah was illiterate.

I have another couple of possibilities but I have yet to find passenger lists with their parents' names on them.

  • Shelly, sorry for the delay, I am not getting alerts to say I have a reply.
These are the only ones I could find.

Edward Sweeney in Griffiths Valuation was in BALLYHALL STREET, Roscrea in 1851

Edward Sweeny in Griffiths Valuation was in the townland of CARROWNAGLOGH in Terryglass in 1852.

This is the Terryglass map zoom out, look south to Nenagh then across right to Roscrea.

I have attached the ship record with John and Hannah on the Peerless.

  • Thanks Margot. I ruled out the John Sweeney on the Peerless because it said his mother's name was Catherine and he was literate - mine wasn't. I have investigated Hannah Sweeney who married James Dunn in Sydney in 1869. She was most likely the daughter of Edward Sweeney and Margaret Banon/Bannon of Thurles (on her marriage certificate it was Barnham - she was illiterate so wouldn't have known there was an error). Based on the parish records, they had Hannah in 1842 who must have died, Mary in 1844 and the Hannah who came to Australia in 1846. There is no mention of this Edward and Margaret having a son at all, although they were married in 1838 so I would be surprised if there weren't other children before 1842. When I was in Tipperary 10 years ago, I went to the Tipperary Family History Research Centre and they gave me that information. However, I can't find any more children in the baptism records, but the parents his wife put on his death certificate are so similar to Hannah's that it seems more than a coincidence. I am now trying to identify descendants of Hannah's children in case they know of a John who was related to Hannah, but I can't find any trees on Ancestry with them in it and limited information. James Dunn was born in Ireland, but I don't know where. Shelley

  • Hi Margot Believe it or not, I found James Dunn who was born in Thurles too! His parents' names were on his marriage certificate and for once were almost accurate - his mother's surname on the baptism register was Byrne but on the certificate was Burns. Shelley
