I am tracing my family back to County of Tipperary, perhaps Portroe/Nenagh.  My Great Grandfather, David Mannix, passed on May 1, 1889 and left his estate/farm to his daughter Elizabeth (Eliza) Kennedy, who was married to a Timothy Kennedy.  His daughter and son-in-law may have lived in Nenagh as well, but their daughter Mary Kennedy later immigrated to the United States and married Edward Tobin in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1900.

Since I will be traveling to Ireland, May 21, 2020 with my two daughters, I would very much like to know if I still have family still living in Portroe/Nenagh.  Especially with the last name of Mannix & Kennedy.

I have attached a Wills & Administration copy that makes reference to David Mannix's death and estate/farm transfer to his daughter (Information is located on the lower right hand side of page 429, 2nd listing from the bottom - Mannix, David).

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Stephen:

thank you for your post and welcome. I will leave this reply to our local volunteers but thought that I would mention that the surname Mannix is often used interchangeably with the surname Minogue.  You may want to include that information for any future searches.

If you have any questions, please let us know.
    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi David, perhaps you could write this info on the Tipperary Facebook pg. You might find some info. If you have a DNA kit you could search for relatives that way. GEDMatch now has a separate Ancestry section for certain regions and you coud search directly for Tiipperary and someone with the same matches might answer you.

  • Jane,

I truly appreciate the quick response!  As for the surname "Minogue," I will query Ancestry to see if someone may have built a tree and/or have information to further research.

I'll cross my fingers for additional updates/leads from Ireland XO volunteers.

  • Dear Stephen:

That's no problem and I will pass this onto a few volunteers as there are a number in the Nenagh/Portroe area who may be able to assist.

Let me know if you need any other help.

    All the best,

    Dear Stephen,

The only marriage for a David Minogue/Mannix/Nix I can find was David who married  Mary Baskerville , Youghalarra 21 Feb 1841 in Youghalarra. They had Doris 1850, Rachel 1853, David 1857, and probably others however as the register only starts 1849/1850 we are missing that information. Eliza married Timothy Kennedy who was a shopkeeper/publican/slate worker in Portroe. They had eleven children between 1863 and 1882 and interestingly they didn't call any of their boys David.

Mary Mannix wife of David died April 1891 aged 78 years (according to death cert- I never believe these- use as a guide only). There is a Mary Baskerville born to James Baskerville and Mary Grace in 1829 in Youghalarra. This could possibly Mary that married David. I  note that there a Benjamin as a baptismal witness - this name also appears in the other records.

I cant find a death record for Elizaand or Timothy Kennedy.

However, Mary Baskerville Kennedy had a brother James who I think was murdered in 1870. He owned a pub in Newtown and was hit over the head and killed. There was an inquest in to his death which was reported in  theNenagh Guardian in 1870. The Nenagh Guradian archives are on line. You can view a transcription of his headstone here http://tipperarystudies.ie/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/C.%20Vol%202%20Parish%20of%20Youghalarra%20reduced.pdf

His daughter Rachel was drowned in a boating accident , along with four others c 1880 and this was also reported in the Nenagh Guardian and the story was picked up by the American newspapers at the time. I have found it in Fulton history. There is no one with the Baskerville name in the area and the Mannix name has along disappeared. Minogue still exists. Kennedy is a very common name and I would suggest to you that you write to the Nenagh Guardian looking for relatives. They are quite accommodating about publishing such letters.

There is a post on the Castletownarra( Old name for Portroe) page about the Baskervilles and the lady there has an enormous amount of research done on the family.

    hope that helps somewhat

    kind regards

    Margaret

  • Hi Rodj:

Would you please post your query about your ancestors from Nenagh and Borrisoleigh as a new message board post?  It is going to be lost in this thread.

    Kind regards,

    Margaret,

Your research is fantastic and I truly appreciate your help!!  I will take your suggestion to query the Nenagh Guardian, especially for the Kennedy surname.  Elizabeth would be my 2nd Great Grandmother.  By the way, I successfully located her death certificate.  It appears that she passed, age 60, on December 20, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The certificate lists Country of Birth as Ireland and parents; David Mannix & Mary Baskerville.  Also as a widow.

I would like to understand what drove their immigration to the United States.  To leave such a beautiful country in incomprehensible.  Perhaps it was the potato famine, political turmoil, etc.  However, It would mean so much to locate relatives in Nenagh and connect!

I have attached her death certificate as reference.

I am so looking forward to my trip next May.  My two daughters and I are planning 8 days in country, but still working on our itinerary.

  • Jane,

Aer Lingus cancelled the flight path from LAX to DUB for May 21st.  The good news, is that they will refund the full amount paid back on to my credit card!  From a rescheduling perspective, my girls and I will most definately rebook our trip but will need to get passed this epedimic first.  Our cioun try is pushing for a reopen and could very well cause unnessary spikes & deaths.  I prya that they do reconsider.

When we do reschedule, I will definately let you know!

All the best from Brea, California!!
