Hello, my grandfather, John Francis Barreet, was born in Knocknaboha, to Michael Barrett and Ellen Scully Barrett.  His birthdate is June 15 1879.  He is the second youngest child born to Michael and Ellen Barrett.  He and three older sisters emigrated to the USA in the late 1890s to early 1900s and the remaining siblings remained in Ireland, in County Tipperary or County Cork.  John, Margaret, Mary and Bridget all lived in the New York City area, maybe even Connecticut and New Jersey as well.

My grandmother is Catherine Hyland, born to John Hyland and Johanna Cotter in Ardinnan.  She emigrated to the USA in the 1900s as did her sister Mary, brothers Thomas, John and James.  My understanding is all the siblings moved to Connecticut and Catherine married John Francis Barrett on Long Island and stayed in NY.

My father is John Francis Barrett, Jr., born 10 Feb 1914, the second son born to Jack and Kate Barrett.  He has an older sister, and older brother and a younger sister.  Sadly all have passed.  I am his youngest daughter of four (one boy and three girls).

I am looking for relatives.  I was in the area back in September 1996 and found it beautiful.  I found Poulmucka, but never did find Knocknaboha.  Instead of turning left at the pub, I went right!  Oh well.

  • Hello Tom,

Thank you for your help in this matter.

I believe my great grandfather was not from County Tipperary, as I am now remembering bits and pieces of a conversation I had with my father before he died in 1986.  I believe he came from County Mayo with his first wife, who sadly died on the side of the road.  He continued on to County Tipperary, married Ellen Scully in Ardfinnan and the rest you have is correct ( except J. Hyland married J. Cotter).

My brother believes he came from County Cork.

And thank you for the link to the OSI.ie site.  I looked at it rather quickly on my iPhone and was impressed, so I will definitely purchase a map of the family homestead.

If you should find anything more with regard to the Barrett or Hylands, please send the information my way.  I think the Barrett relatives could be found in and around Cahir and Clonmel.  The Hylands might still be in the Ardfinnan area.

    Regards,

    Robin Hastings

  • Thank you, Tom, for this information.

I have spoken with my sister and brother and they both say that Dad said his father came from Cork.

This Patrick Barrett does seem to fit in my tree.  I have started to work on my genealogy again after taking some time off.

Good to hear from you!  I still think you are somehow a "Barrett" as you look so much like my father.
