Am searching for any information on James KELLY born circa 1799 Killaloe, Co. Clare and then of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.  He married Bridget CAREY, in either Co. Clare or Co. Tipperary, but have been unable to find date of marriage.  All of their children were born in Nenagh. James worked for Jeremiah STAR in Nenagh as a tailor from about 1835 until 1838/1839.  James was transported to Australia, with his brother in law Matthew HOURIGAN, and arrived in Australia in 1839.

James applied for his family to join him in Australia but they did not embark.  In the early 1860's I have 4 of the children arriving in Australia.  In 1866 at Ipswich, Queensland James remarried to Catherine MAHAR

James died in 1869 in Toowoomba, Queensland.  On his death certificate it gives his parents as Michael KELLYand Bridget TOOHEY - I have no information on them at all so anything would be appreciated.

  • Hi Wendy,

I am a descendant of Matthew Hourigan. He was my mother's great, great grandfather and he was transported to Australia as a convict. Are you also a family member?

  • Hi Wendy,

I can't find anything that looks like the right marriage for James Kelly and Bridget Carey but I did locate two births which are probably the right parents - but not in Nenagh.  Have you got John bapt.1838 in Limerick City and a child (name not clear) born in 1829 in Killaloe, Co Clare?

    Regards, Allan
