I am looking to find anything about a Rodger MADDEN, b. abt 1800 in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, or his wife, Mary (LNU) b. about 1797.
About all I know of them is from Mary's gravestone which reads: "Mary, wife of Rodger Madden/ died Oct 6, 1865/ aged 68 years/ Native of Ireland/ Co. Tipperary/ Parish of Ro____", and a couple of census records where she is living with one of her children (w/o Rodger).
Someone else transcribed the parish name from the gravestone as "Roame", but I located someone else descended from a daughter of Rodger and Mary's, and her obituary states she was born in Roscrea. "Roscrea" matches the illegible parish name on the stone. The parish name cannot be longer than "Roscrea", there is no room on the stone for a longer name.
The census records don't give consistent ages for Mary, from the ages given she could have been born anytime between 1789 and 1800. Rodger never appears on the census records, I believe he died in Ireland before Mary and her children came to the US. Rodger and Mary had the following children: Margaret b. 1817, Daniel b. 1821, James b. 1827 and Michael b. 1828. All lived in the Auburn, New York area after arriving from Ireland.

Thank you, Eamonn. I knew it was not likely that I would find much. As to the Moroneys, it is uncommon here in the US, enough so that we notice when we encounter another Moroney. I have had a little more luck tracing my Moroney ancestors. They are from Co. Tipperary and not Co. Clare. Ballynahinch Parish to be specific, which is somewhat near Co. Clare. I have baptismal records of my g-grandfather, James Moroney and two of his siblings. They state that the are from "Shallee". There are three townlands with Shallee in their names in the parish, Shallee White, Shallee Lower and Upper and Shallee Coughlan. I suppose another possibility is they originally came from Shallee Townland in Co. Clare but I consider that unlikely.
James Moroney's father was also James. One of the siblings was an older brother Martin so it is possible the father of the elder James was also Martin, but I have not found anything. I cannot find any marriage record for the elder James and his wife, although I know her name, Anne Coughlan.
One thing that puzzles me is that there was another Moroney family that lived near where both James' settled in the US. As I stated, the name is somewhat scarce in the US. I assume it was not a coincidence that two Moroney families decided to establish themselves near each other in a sparsely populated area, but I cannot find any relationship or other connection whatsoever..

Hi Eamonn,
I find it awesome that you have Moroney inlaws..
This is what I know:
James Moroney (b. 1816) married Anne E Coughlan (b. 1822). No record of marriage known.
3 children born in Ireland:
Martin (b. 31 Jan 1845, sponsors Thomas Coughlan and Judith Gleeson)
Bridget (b. 26 Jan 1846, sponsors Patrick Moroney & Bridget McGrath)
James (b. 25 Dec 1848, sponsors Thomas Binane and Bridget Cusack)
All three baptismal records give an address of Shallee, Ballinahinch Parish.
They had another son, John, born Sept 1 1850 in England so I know they left Ireland in the two years between the births of the last two children. I have an Ancestry.com ship arrival record that appears to be Anne with children James and John, without the father James, or Bridget (who may have come over with an uncle, John Coughlan) or Martin, who may have died young. The ship was the Arctic, arriving in New York 8 Nov 1853.
They settled in Montezuma, New York, in the central part of New York state near Auburn, NY.
The other Moroney I mention was Michael Moroney, b 1808-1810. He had a large family in Montezuma NY. I found an Ancestry.com record that may be him, suggesting his (unnamed) father was from Co. Waterford. If so, he is probably unrelated.
And of course I'll be wearing the green for St. Paddy's Day!
I greatly appreciate anything you do for me!
Regards,
Michael Moroney
