I am looking for birth or marriage records for my ggg-grandfather, John Luther, who lived in Clonmel in 1806-07. His wife was Johanna Grady and they had at least one son, William Luther (b 1806/07).
I have William's baptismal record, showing these parents, and have found John in Griffth's valuation, but am unable to move further, without his dob, parent's names. Supposedly, this line has been traced back through England to 1400s Germany, but without the link from John to his father, I cannot continue.
Can anyone help make this connection? Thank you!

Frances:
You don't mention the religious denomination for the Luther family. The records for the RC church St. Marys go back to 1790 and are included on Roots Ireland but i get no record when I searched for John. Since the son was born 1806-1807, John Luther was likely born before 1790.
My resource book indicates that Church of Ireland records for Clonmel go back to 1766. However, they are not on Roots so the local church would have to be contacted.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for checking. My grandmother, Catherine Luther (1833) was Roman Catholic, as were her parents, William and Margaret. I'm assuming William's parents were also RC but really don't know for certain. I've been unable to locate a marriage, birth or death record for either of them.
I'll keep digging. Thanks again!

Hi Frances,
I looked at www.clonmelgraveyards.com and searched for Luther. The results show two records.
John Thomas Luther of Prince Edward Place died 19 Feb 1898 and is buried in St. Patricks Cemnetary, Clonmel.
Thomas Luther died 12 Nov 1845 and is buried in Old St. Mary's Cemetary, Clonmel
St.Patricks is the newer cemetary.
I don't know if these are your family but they are the only Luthers buried within a 10 mile radius of Clonmel. The database covers all local cemetaries.
Kind regards,
Anne Dennehy

Thank you, Anne. Those may help. John Thomas Luther died too early but could be father to John. John's son, William, was born in 1806/1807, so perhaps I should pursue Thomas instead.
It seems peculiar that the Luther family, which was fairly prominent (military governors and mayors) in the 1700s should vanish almost completely by the 1800s. I wonder why?
I found an online ebook "The History of Clonmel" that has been very helpful for earlier generations, also.
Again, thanks for checking!

Thank you, Clare. I'll keep looking.
Anne, sorry - I said John Thomas died "too early" when I meant to say "too late." He could have been William's brother, though, so I'll give him a look, too.

Roger, tremendous thanks to you and Christina! You've broken the brick wall as this is most definitely the line I've been seeking.
William (1806) is my gg-grandfather, making John Francis (1769) my ggg-grandfather. Johanna Grady is the name on William's baptismal certificate, as well. The odd thing is that I had come across records for a Johanna in Pennsylvania, but the dates were wrong - no doubt it was their daughter. I never expected to find the older generation in the U.S. - a lesson learned, I think.
Now, if the information I picked up on another Luther family line is correct, this breakthrough will help link my line to the Luther's in Essex, England and then back to Hans der G Luther (in Brandenburg, Germany - Martin Luther's father.
You and your colleagues have been so helpful. I cannot thank you enough!

Thank you, Seamus. The lineage Roger and Christina located is, indeed, my line. John Francis Luther and Johanna Grady emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA around 1849.
My next challenge is to connect John Francis Luther to his parents - somewhere in Clonmel or Youghal.

Jack, thank you for checking on this. There seem to have been a great many Luthers in Ireland.
John Francis Luther did emigrate to the United States and died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA in April 1856. Apparently all of his children, except my gg-grandfather William (1806/07) emigrated with their parents. Someone on ancestry.com suggested the Luther line traces back through Essex, England to Brandenburg, Germany and is, in fact, a direct line from Martin Luther's brother, Jakob Luther.
My next problem (of course) is to find John Francis Luther's birth record. I was given this quote regarding the first John Luther in Ireland:
?John Luther born in Essex 1623, settled in Youghal. His descendant Thomas Luther came to Clonmel about 1726, which year he was made free of the borough. His son Thomas Luther was mayor 1756-7-8-9, and one of the most successful traders of the time. Died at Clonmel Thomas Luther Esq. by which his son Samuel a Lieutenant on half pay gets an estate of a thousand pounds a year.? - From the ?Freeman?s Journal? March 30, 1773 (as quoted in ?History of Clonmel? by William P. Burke, 1907)
So far, I have not made the connection between my John Francis Luther (1769) and this family, but there does seem to be a possibility?Frances
