I am trying to compile more information about 2nd Great aunt Mary Dent. I have located her on the England 1871 census aged 31 in Woolwich Kent attached to a military listing. Given the dates she would have been born circa 1840. Also I have learned that she married in Agra India sometime before 1864, this could mean that she was posted with her family after her stated birth in Clonmel Tipperary. The only army records I have at my disposal do not reflect parents names. Not much to go on but following my visit to WDYTYA 2013 I felt I should cast my net wider...Thank You

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in church records from CLonmel for information? Civil registration did not become mandatory in Ireland until 1864, so births, baptisms, marriages, deaths before this period were recorded by the local parish church. If you can find Mary?s birth record it will give you her parents? names.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Clonmel: St. Mary?s parish, follow this link
For information on Church of Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
There are also some church records available online:
www.familysearch.org have a huge database of genealogical records including some birth and marriages from Ireland
www.rootsireland.ie have a vast collection of itrish Church records available, however you have to pay to use this website.
