If there is any possible way to find out where my family was living in Foildarragh, Co. Tipperary prior to their emmigration to New York State, USA, I would dearly love to have some photos of where they lived...even if it is now something different, crumbled down, or the home is missing entirely.  I may never get a chance to set foot on their "place" in Ireland, but it would truly help if I could see it and know it.

My family came from Foildarragh, County Tipperary.  Baptismal certificate from the 1850s lists this as the family home.  I am searching for any and all information on the family (ancestors) of Thomas Bourke and his wife, Maggie Ryan.  They had at least 5 children, Honoria (Anna), Peter, Margaret, Bridget, and Catherine (Kate), all of whom immigrated to New York State in the United States in 1860. (THANK YOU to the kind volunteer who sent me all of the Bourke family's Baptismal documentation!!!) Also looking for the family (ancestors) of Patrick Hickey and his wife, Catherine Noonan.  Their son, Michael, married the Bourke daughter, Honoria in New York State, but I believe they may all have been from the same area of Ireland and that they knew each other before immigrating....since they all settled together in the same area of upstate NY.  Please contact me if you have any information about these three families from the Thurles area of County Tipperary.  MANY thanks!

28 May 2020 Google Satellite map showing Foildarragh as the area to the west of Foilnadrough and the road to St. Patrick’s RC Church in Kilcommon where the children of Thomas Bourke and Maggie (Ryan) Bourke were all Baptized between 1848 and 1871. Depending on where the family lived in Foildarragh, the distance to the church is between 2-3 miles.

  • Thank you so much, Paddy, for your help with finding my ancestors and possible family still in Ireland!  This stuff isn't easy, is it?

Though I am sure they were related somehow, the birth years for the people you sent make me think that they were probably not direct lineage.  Although...Is it possible that MY Thomas was married to a first wife who died, and that this Thomas Bourke (born 1845 & married to Grace) was his firstborn son?  I know that this Thomas & Grace with sons Michael, John and Thomas were listed as Blacksmiths in Foildarragh in the 1911 census. The Michael Bourke who was a farmer in 1853 may have been a brother or even father to my Thomas....depending on what his birth year was???

To give you more info to go on:

My Thomas Bourke was born around 1822. He was married to Margaret Ryan (born abt 1839). Their children were born in the 1860s.  He immigrated to the USA in 1880.
I have birth/baptismal records for three of Thomas & Maggie's children:

Peter -- baptized 30 May 1864 address Foildarragh, Parish Kilcommon,
County Tipperary (sponsors Andrew & Catherine Ryan)

Bridget -- born 4 April 1866 Newport, County Tipperary

Margaret -- born/baptized 16 June 1868 Newport, County Tipperary --baptismal
certificate states the family are residents of Foildarragh, Parish of
Kilcommon, Archdiocese of Cashel and the sponsors were
Patrick Corbett and Margaret Danaher.  Bapt Cert signed by
                 Edmond J. Ryan, Parish Priest.

I haven't found the birth/baptismal records yet for Honoria, who was born about 1862...was the older sister to Peter, Bridget, and Margaret...and was my great-grandmother.

If you find anything on these Bourkes/Burkes and their ancestors, please let me know.  And also any information on Patrick Hickey and Catherine Noonan from the same time period.

Please feel free to email me directly if you prefer at:  ashbyruth@juno.com

    ...and THANK YOU again!

  • That's my Great Aunt Katie!  She was the youngest sibling as far as I know. I even have a picture of her, but I didn't have her birth date.

Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!

I think you are on the right track.

  • Ahhh Paddy, you're marvelous!

Their son, Michael Hickey 5-7-1866, was my great grandfather, married to Honoria (Annie) Burke.

Pat & Catherine (Noonan) Hickey had 5 other children besides the ones you found:

    Maggie 1862, John 1863, Daniel 1869, James 1871, and Edward 1874

(all boys and only the one daughter...they had some sort of sports team for sure!)

The information I have found so far says that they were from Croom in Limerick?  Is that what you found, too?  Do you know anything more about them or their families?  Were they farmers?  How far is it from Croom to Foildarragh?

Can you tell me who Patrick Hickey's parents were?  Irish naming patterns of that time would say that his father was probably "John"...but I can't find out for sure.

How far back do your records go there?  Were there any census records from the early to mid 1800s.

I'm sure you can tell from all of the questions spilling from me that I am so happy to have made a connection with you Paddy!

Now...can you help me connect with any family I might have left over there?

    Warm regards,

    Ruth
