Hello

my name is Michelle Tonkin and I am researching my family history tree for the dowdle and o'loughlin but there are variations of these names traced back to tipperary, thurles Ireland.

The dowdle family lived in ttipperary.  Father Stephen dowdle (senior) and Margaret Carey his wife who lived in pike st tipperary according to the census records.

they had the following children:  Stephen, Thomas, Mary, Patrick, John and Michael.  As gas as I know all children except Michael came to Australia. John was a Christian brother and Mary a mercy sister.

stephen dowdle married Margaret o'loughlin and they had four children hannorah, John, Patrick and Margaret.  Patrick and Margaret died at a early age.

Hannorah married Henry Horace knight my dads father and my grandfather who lived in perth Western Australia.

the o'loughlin family was father Patrick and mother Bridget Burke both of tipperary.  They had children being Thomas and Margaret.  I do know they had other children but do not know there names.

both Margaret and Thomas came to a Australia to live.

any information you may have on these two families would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards  Michelle

  • Hi Michelle,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and performed a search for all the Dowdles.  However I only found two. Thomas in 1870 in the parish of Thurles, Mary in 1872 in the parish of thurles.  I can't seem to find the others.  I never asked you where you got their birthdates?  Am I replicating work that you have already done?  And what census have you looked at for the other information?  The only complete Irish census that survived the fire in the Fourcourts are the 1901 and the 1911.  Bits and pieces of other census that had been checked out on the day survived.

I cant understand why I cant find the other children,  is it possible that Stephen had been widowed and remarried?  Only the two youngest are showing up.

Try the following sites  www.rootsireland.ie  (church records)  www.irishgenealogy.ie  (church records for a number of counties not covered by the other site)

    www.askaboutireland.ie  Griffith valuation available here

Go to the passenger lists on the governmental sites of Australia.  These are quite comprehensive.

Most people who emigrated were illiterate and undocumented.  They didn't know how to spell their names and hadn't a clue as to what age they were.  At the port of arrival their names were recorded phonetically, their ages were only guessed, and this is the information that followed them for the rest of their lives.

The proof of this occured in 1909 when the old age pension was introduced into ireland.  People had to prove their ages and were forced to go through baptismal records to establish when they were born.  That is why there is such HUGE discrepancies between ages in the 1901 census and the 1911 census of Ireland.  Dates were found to be out by as much as twenty years in some cases.

    Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi anne

i went back through my records and found that Stephen dowdle (senior) is listed as a grocer and farmer on birth and death certificates for their children in Australia.  Also Patrick o'o'loughlin was a farmer in tipperary Ireland as well.

According to my records from family members in Australia John dowdle may have been born in Holmpatrick, Dublin Ireland.

1901 census Stephen and Margaret dowdle lived at 91 Pike st thurles tipperary.

i will keep looking so any other details you can find would be greatly appreciated.

is there a cemetery in tipperary where dowdle relations could be buried or records kept of baptisms, births and deaths etc.

    kind regards

    michelle
