The only record I have is that this family lived near Thurles.

John Slack married Anne Byrne in 1845. Marriage place unknown.

They definately had three children, possibly a fourth and lived near Thurles.

Rose Ann Slack born 1848.

Catherine Slack born 1850.

Andrew Slack born 1856.

Possible other son, unknown. May have died young.

John Slack died and Anne and the 3 chidren moved to Dublin.

In late 1865 the 3 children left for Australia. They arrived in 1866.

This is where the information came from, Rose Ann Slack's paperwork on arriving in Australia.

Stated Father dead. Mother stayed in Dublin.

Joining Aunty Mary Byrne in Sydney.

Our origin, near Thurles, Tipperary.

Rose Ann Slack is my great great grand mother.

I have their complete lives in Australia but would love to know more of their origin.

 Brian, Sydney, Australia.

  • Hi Pally,

Have you tried www.rootsireland.ie or www.irishgenealogy.ie to look for church records?

I found a marriage record for a John Slack to an Ann Byrne in 1843 in Co. Wicklow.  You'd  have to view the record to see what parish this is in.  About €5 I think.

I would hazard a guess that the records for Rose Ann will be under the name Ann.  Children were most often named in records  after their parents or grandparents but were called often called by a different name (Rose?)  Just something to keep in mind.  This went on until quite recently.  I am the only one in my family who is actually called the same name as on my birth cert!!

    Hope this helps,

    Regards, Anne Dennehy
