Hi Fellow Seekers
I am looking for My Great Grandmother's family. Bridget Hogan's parents were Thomas Hogan and Margaret (this was on the cert too) Hogan. How many Hogans are there in Tipperary? Bridget was born c1858 in Yokalshan, Tipperary. This must be a townland although one I have not been able to locate! She married Matthew O'Connor who came from an island on the Shannon in Galway. They married in Waimate, NZ in 1886.
Cheers
John

Hi John
Thank you for your query. I had a quick look at the townlands in Tipperary which you can find easily by searching google 'Townlands of County Tipperary'. The closest name to your spelling is 'Youghal' and 'Youghalvillage' The land division this townland falls under is the barony of 'Owney and Arra', the civil parish of 'Youghalarra' and the poor law union of 'Nenagh (North Tipperary)'. If this is the correct townland then you will now be able to search for any existing church records.
Here are some websites that will aid you further in your research:
You can check for information about the frequency of the surname in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name among other things here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

If this is not the correct place of origin it is best to search for emigration records that might lead you back on the right track.Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information -and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. There are lots of books and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could look at: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand.
I hope this is of help to you John. Do not hesitate to contact us again.
