I am searching for the families of Edmund/Edward Gorman b. abt 1846 in Tipperary and his wife Bridget O'Brien b. abt 1848 in Mullinahone, Tipperary. By 1870 they were married and living in New York City, USA, but I suspect that the marriage took place in the United States.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

  • Hi Bonnie

Thank you for you query. You have some good information from where to start your research. Firstly because you have one place name to work from go to http://www.irish-place-names.com/ where you can enter it into the search engine and it will give you all the land divisions that it falls under. This is a real help when using other search engines to find records. Then I would recommend that you go to http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ and search under Roman Catholic records ( South Tipperary) for Mullinahone and you will be able to see what records still survive and this may give you Bridgets parents names etc.

Because you do not have a placename of origin for E. Gorman You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/

The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive.

Also Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

  • Bonnie,

I have some info for you that you may find useful.  I saw from your website at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bonniekgorman… that you have listed the 1870 census record for Edward Gorman as the 1870 U.S. Federal Census 28 Dec 1870 Tenth District 5th Ward, New York County, New York, United States of America.

Are you aware that this is the 2nd enumeration of the 1870 census?  What this means is that they did it twice AND there is ANOTHER record for your Bridget and Edward Gorman out there.  It pays to check both records because they sometimes have different information on them.  I found the 1st enumeration for you and the most important thing about it is that they answered the Column 14 Question [If married within the year state month].  On the 1st enumeration done on 31 Aug 1870 it says Edmund and Bridget Gorman married in MAY of 1870; therefore they WERE married in the USA and not in Ireland.   I know this is the SAME record that you found for Edward and Bridget Gorman because despite the small differences (District 6 instead of District 10, the use of Edmund for Edward, Seaman for Boatman, etc) their neighbors all around them are exactly the same folks (Maher's and Barnett's) although their neighbors are listed in a slightly different order.  Here's a transcription of the information:

1870:  New York Ward 5 District 6, New York, NY; Roll:M593_977; Page: 132B; Image: 268; Family History Library Film: 552476.

    Enumerated:  31 Aug 1870

Address:  New York City Post Office

    Dwelling# 140

    Family# 399

    Lines:  02-03

02 Edmund Gorman 26 c1844 Ireland Occ Seaman Parents both of foreign birth Married in the census year (May 1870) Male CITIZEN

03 Bridget Gorman 22 c1848 Ireland Occ Keeping House Parents both of foreign birth Married in the Census year (May 1870)

If you have access to ancestry.com you can look at the record by going here:

    http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1870usfedcen&indiv=try&h=…

but I'll try and attach it to this post in case you don't have access at ancestry.com

It would appear to me from looking at these two records that your Bridget Gorman nee O'Brien immigrated thru CANADA (the 2nd enumeration rec for 1870 that you found erroneously says she was born there) but the 1st enumeration that I found says she was born in Ireland.  Also, it is important to note that your Edmund Gorman must have become naturalized prior to 1870 as he states that he is a CITIZEN...so you should look for that naturalization record!  He would have had to have been in the states for some little while prior to being eligible so again, another reason to believe that they were married in the USA rather than in Ireland.   Hope this helps somewhat! Happy Hunting! Kathy
