I have a brother of an ancestor Peter Meagher, dob 16 Mar 1836) who filled out his naturalization paperwork in the US in 1908. He stated that he was born in Queens Co but his last residence was Drumard, Co. Tipperary.

Since I believe his brother (my ancestor, John Maher, dob abt 1825) and sister (Mary Maher, dob 1828) were born in Tipperary, based on their obituaries, this seems a logical starting point. But I cannot figure out where Drumard is.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

  • Kimberly:

There are two townlands called Dromard Beg and Dromard More in Killavinoge parish. Killavinoge parish is in northeast Tipperary near the border with Queens Co. See attached link http://www.irelandgenweb.com/irltip/CivilParishes/KillavinogeCP.htm

Sorry, I should have indicated Co.Leix. Queens was the name of the county prior to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland.

  • Tom, thank you very much! I noticed quite a few Mahers in and around Killavinoge and Cashel, looking in the church records and the civil records. None seem to be mine. Both the obituaries I have say that the parents of the immigrants were Peter and Mary Maher. I haven't seen ANY Peters in the records so far. I guess he would have been born about 1800(ish) and I don't think that he or his wife immigrated to the U.S.  I am still looking in the US for records of when the children landed (there were six children. I am only sure of Peter, Mary and John....all very common names) in New Jersey.

My husband and I are travelling to Ireland in October of this year and it would be lovely to tromp around the area where his ancestors came from!

Thanks for all your suggestions and help!
