Hello,

I am brand new to this website. I never knew this existed. I have just recently uncovered my Irish roots. I am 36 years old and live in the United States. I have recently started researching my ancestors and now I am stuck. I am looking for information regarding Mary Elizabeth Hartnett (born Ryan) and her parents. Mary was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in August 1845 and died in 1911 in Illinois, United States. Her father's name is Patrick Ryan - unknown date of birth or date of death. Her mother's name is Hannora Ryan (born Gleison) - unknown date of birth or date of death.

Mary is my great-great-great grandmother.

As I stated before, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

  • Hi Karen,

Welcome to the challenging world of Irish genealogy!

I searched the site www.rootsireland.ie/ and foud the baptismsal record of Mary Ryan father Patrick mother Honora Gleeson in Tipperary in 1845 + - 1. They have it as 1844.

rootsireland.ie is a pay site so it will cost to get the record (but they 40% off till 13th October).

However, as you know the parents' names all you would find out from buying the record is the parish ofm registration which I managed to get by trial and error and it is Templemore.

It was disappointing that I could not find the marriage of Patrick & Honora on rootsireland.

You might like to look at the Tithe Applotments which are free to search. These were done 1823-37 & there are 164 Patrick Ryans in Tipperary on them!

If you go to findmyparish at the top of this webpage if you select Munster, Tipperary then Templemore in the 3 boxes on the left side of the page you will find that Templemore has a page and you can post with them for some expert assistance.

  • Hi Col,

Thank you so much for the information that you have found. As I said any information is helpful. I don't have a lot of older relatives left and I'm trying to find as much information as possible and they have given me some, so now I am trying to find the rest on my own.

I hope to be able to visit Ireland in the near future.

I will definitely check out the leads that you haven given me and see where I can go with them. I to have come across a lot of Patrick Ryans. It must have been a very popular name then.

    Thank you again.
